It's a bit much to dismiss a season-long stat like that on the basis of winning a single game, and also to only looking at the #1 yardage QB. I mean, what are the numbers for the top 2 or 3 QBs in a season winning the SB? How about making it to the SB?

Putting up a ton of passing yards usually (but not always) means the team has a pretty good offense. It doesn't say anything about the defense, which is also a pretty big part in making it to and winning a SB.

Eli is isn't a huge yardage guy and he's won 2 SBs. I doubt anyone would want him over Marino or a bunch of other high-yds/no SB win QBs.

This has actually been one of the better and reasonable exchanges on QBs as of late I have read around here. How the OL figures into passing stats also seems to be an odd thing. Manning in latter Indy years, Rodgers in the past few years and to some extent Brady several years ago have dealt with shitfest OLs.

Oh tons of high yardage guys have made it to a Super Bowl. But most of the all time leaders didn't win. And even most these guys being listed off didn't have elite unstoppable passing performances in winning it all. Flacco did... but that goes back to the unpredictably of it all. That guy was terrible in the playoffs and turned into John Elway for four games.

I agree with you. I think defense, and specifically having an elite pass rush, may be more important than QB in winning a Super Bowl. The greatest offenses of all time have been shut down when it counted by good defenses. They are certainly attempting to negate it with rules changes, but even last year the Broncos had the greatest offense of all time statistically and were run over in the Super Bowl.

This place continues to insist that we need to have an elite QB to win championships. That is a pipe dream. You have to be unbelievably lucky to pull that off. Only 5 teams in a decade will find Peyton or Brady type talent, and those teams will NEVER let them go.

The Chiefs have to try to find that elite QB. But they have to build their team as if they'll never find one. I said earlier in the year, I think Flacco and Eli are excellent QBs to have. It's what makes Big Ben great, and it will make Russell Wilson great. You know what these guys do? They make big throws in big situations. Alex Smith can do most of the things these guys do. He's a good QB. Obviously good enough to win with.


But put him on a team like Carolina, Jax, heck even the Chiefs and he doesn't win like he does now. He plays in the perfect system for him.


He's not even close to a Manning, luck or Rodgers as far as pure passing ability.

4. Alex Smith can make plays; the complaint is that, as a rule, he doesn't make plays.
In over 100 games he has like 5 where he throws for 300 yards.
He has never led a top ten offense in his 9 year caeer- actually, I don't think he has ever led a top 15 offense in his career.
In his best year, he threw only 23 touchdowns while his career average is less than 20 touchdowns per year.

He's pathetic, really.

Oh. Because Peyton became a free agent and went through a Lebron like free agent search, that makes it easier to find a HOF QB. Finding an elite QB is a once in a decade thing. Of course that should be what you shoot for, but then people tear down good QBs like Russell Wilson because he's not elite is just plain stupid.

And yes, I said the Chiefs have to keep trying to find QBs. And they haven't even tried.

And no, I could give a shit about Alex Smith's stats. The Chiefs' offensive stats. He's better than anyone we've had in a long time and he's keeping us in games. But he's not even in the same league as the Russell Wilsons or the Flaccos of this world until he learns how to deliver in the clutch.
