Says Justin Houston wants a JJ Watt type contract from the Chiefs. Watt signed a six year 100 million deal with Houston.

Those numbers actually seem fairly reasonable, assuming Houston keeps at his trade. Probably ends up being a little bit less guaranteed, but I could certainly live with that salary cap hit year-by-year.

Alex Smith is on a longterm deal. We also have the draft available to us for his replacement (though I'm not holding my breath).

In the time it takes for us to move on from Alex and give our new guy a fat QB contract, Justin Houston's old deal will have expired or it will be easy enough to restructure and not be a burden to us. That's the span of 5-6 years.

It's not that hard to figure out.

We have 50m+ in cap space next offseason.

We can pay Houston market value and still have enough left to get the needed guys signed and add to the roster with a slash or 2 in FA.

The dialogue between him and the Chiefs has been long-ongoing, they have made significant progress and the Chiefs know that franchising him two years in a row is going to cost them well over $30 million over two years already.
