My personal rule of thumb has been "be your own insurance". Take the money you would spend to them and put it away to yourself in some form of savings/investment instrument just like they would. If they're willing to bet you won't need it then you should too. They have done alot of research to know exactly the break even point so they can make money off of you and paying that to yourself is using their research for free. And it's there if you do need it.

Except with a service contract, you pay whatever.. 1200-1800 bucks up front, and thats it.

In your method, you save up the 1800 bucks and put it away.. ok engine breaks, 17 grand in this case.

Lots of OMG NOBODY NEEDS WARRANTIES THEY DONT COVER ANYTHING in this thread.. I can tell you thats just not the case. I have many years in the business both selling and service writing for warranties. A comprehensive warranty covers nearly any problem you might have. If the warranty isnt comprehensive, dont buy it. Dont take advice of people who arent experts on this subject, because like most things involving used cars, its a bunch of misconceptions parroted by people who have next to no experience regarding the subject matter. Me, Sauto, and maybe the other cat who said he was a service advisor would be the only people to listen to in this case.

Is there a chance you might not use it? Sure. Same chance with that health insurance thats mandated by the government, Same thing with gap coverage, same thing with comprehensive auto coverage.. Does that mean you dont need them or that they arent worth it when something happens? Not hardly.

Is that a chance your willing to take on a porsche.. that nobody wants to work on, that has extremely expensive parts, that people wonder why the **** you would buy one for a kid anyways? Sure, is it a pain in the ass for a service advisor to get shit covered sometimes? Yes. Did I ever have a warranty company deny a customer of mine coverage when they had a true failure, and not some bullshit they where trying to fake? Never.

Buy the warranty if you have to have this car. Tell them you will buy it at cost only.

Thank me later~
