QB Non-controversy

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2016/1...and-the-qb-non

Since the bye week, Smith is throwing deep on 20 percent of his attempts. He is 4-for-13 for 120 yards, with one touchdown. A 30 percent completion rate might not sound like much, but that's what you expect from all quarterbacks in the league on deep balls. If anyone is consistently completing more than 40 percent, you get suspicious.

There is a slight discrepancy in the PFR and PFF deep ball definition. But for our purposes, this is negligible. Because the point is that the Chiefs did not start dialing it up more, or throwing it more, just because Foles was in the game. The game-plan was: let's challenge deep and focus on Kelce. Both Smith and Foles did just that. And both did it at a rate-per-attempt that would be among the most aggressive units in the league, if PFF's numbers are any indication.

Against the Colts, Smith was 4-of-5 for 66 yards to Travis Kelce. He targeted Kelce on 26 percent of attempts.
Foles was 3-of-5 for 35 yards to Travis Kelce. He targeted Kelce on 23 percent of attempts.

Alex Smith >> Foles > Bray

Foles can definitely beat the Jags by at least 10 if he plays smart. If he's gambling on these deep balls come Sunday without having a well-rounded game we could be in for a very, very rough afternoon.

Some of the most accurate deep ball chuckers in recent history:

Rodgers, Big Ben, Brady, Manning (prime years), Flacco, Brees

Yeah, we certainly don't want any of that! Those guys never bring home a ring, or all of them, I don't know you tell me?

It only took a half to see that Smith and his conservative pussy nature are the root cause of our dink n dunk offense and that Foles was looking for paydirt whenever possible. They looked like an entirely different team under Foles and even though they may have made some slight adjustments for him. It was clear that it's Alex and not Andy that is the pussy and the constant comments from Reid over the years about trying to get Smith to open it up backs this up. I would also say that the bubble screens were much more effective after Foles backed the D off with a couple deep throws which never happen under Smiff.

Not ready to come out and say Foles > Smiff, nor am I saying Alex is a terrible QB, just that it was refreshing to see the O actually scare a D a little for the first time in years.

I thought it was pretty clear that the game plan against Indy was to get vertical. You knew it right off the bat via the play selection early on.

So yes, i don't think it was ever in doubt that vertical plays were drawn up on Sunday, it wasn't just a "Nick Foles Thing".

But that changes nothing about my stance since this discussion started.

You are a delusional ****. The Chiefs have never employed anything resembling "what a real QB looks like" in the modern era.

Probably true so my question is why announce that foles is starting that early in the week? Is there some NFL rule I don't know about? Wouldn't it be better to say its a game time decision? The other team is going to prep for Foles now who runs the ball less himself and throws it deeper more often.

You assume he'll throw it deeper more often. I don't think so. From the beginning of the Indy game you knew that Reid wanted to get vertical, so our plays downfield were by design, not simply a product of Foles coming onto the field.

The Jaguars field a better defense. Foles had all day to throw against Indy. He won't have that much time against the Jags.

Personally, i think our offense will look the same. And if it does, what does that say about Alex?

What does that say about Reid?

What i want to know is: Is Alex simply a product of Reid's system? If we can throw a guy like Foles in and have the same success or more, i think that's an indication that system is good, not necessarily the QB. If Foles stinks it up, it's a good case for Alex, not necessarily the system.

Remember AJ Feely? Kevin Kolb? He made those average/below average QB's look good enough to entice other teams. He actually got good production out of guys like Vick and Jeff Garcia. What happened to McNabb after he left Reid? Complete flop.....

Remember why Tyler Bray wanted to be a Chief? "Reid gets QB's paid"...

So lets see on Sunday.

It will look the same and then everyone will bitch that Andy handcuffed Foles. They will have expected Reid to change the entire offensive philosophy for a backup. They will be dumb.

He doesn't even have to ball-out, just step beyond the murky haze of indecision that the other party continually shows, and he'll come off like a golden god.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith has reason to be conflicted about sitting out Sunday

Adam Teicher
ESPN Staff Writer

comment
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The last time Alex Smith had a concussion, he lost his job as a starting quarterback.

In 2012, when playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Smith was concussed and sat out a game. When he returned the follow week, his starting spot had been given to Colin Kaepernick and Smith never got it back. After that season, he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

So, if anyone has reason to push things, it's Smith, particularly considering that under current circumstances both he and the Chiefs believe he doesn’t have a concussion. That’s why Smith acknowledged being conflicted about giving up his starting job, if only for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, to Nick Foles.

“It was a very different situation [with the 49ers]," Smith said. “When I went through that, my eyes were a big deal in that, as far as my vision. There were things there, things that were going on that obviously triggered that. You get put in [concussion] protocol.

“I don’t have any symptoms [now]. I haven’t had any of those issues. ... I’m a football player. I feel good."

The decision was made by coach Andy Reid, though he consulted with Smith. For Smith's part, his own history was only part of the concern. Foles is a favorite of Reid’s. When the Philadelphia Eagles drafted Foles in 2012, Reid was their coach.

Alex Smith took hits twice last Sunday in Indianapolis that forced the Chiefs quarterback out of the game. AP Photo/Darron Cummings
The Chiefs offense worked better in last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts when Foles was at quarterback. He and Smith threw roughly an equal number of passes, but Foles had four completions of 28 or more yards and Smith had none.

Reid has said that when Smith is ready to play again, he'll be the Chiefs' starting quarterback. Still, it's human nature for Smith to be uncomfortable with the situation.

On the other side of Smith's dilemma is the science. While he doesn't believe he has a concussion, he's not ignoring the facts of what occurred in Indianapolis. “Certainly something happened," he said. “Don’t know what it was. Don’t know what you want to call it."

Smith was removed from the game twice after taking hits. He staggered after getting off the ground the first time. He lay on the ground for a few uncomfortable seconds after the second.

All that remains from those hits, Smith said, was a nasty cut on his right ear, one that was covered by a bandage on Wednesday.

But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be taking a risk by playing against the Jaguars.

“There’s a lot of research that says [with] any kind of head trauma or whatever you want to call it, time to heal is obviously important," he said.

Smith passed the concussion exams both times in Indianapolis. But something this week tugged at him to back off.

“I’ve got three little kids," Smith said. “You only get one brain, as far as I know. I feel great, but the last thing I wanted was to go out there and what if something happens again? All of a sudden you’re asking different questions at that point. So I’m not ready for that. I don’t want to be thinking about any of that.

“I love playing football. I love my teammates. I love everything about it. The last thing I want to do [and] I think anybody wanted to see was to come back too soon and to see something happen again. Would that have happened? Maybe, maybe not. You just don’t know. This is everybody taking the side of caution and trying to make the best decision. It’s not black and white."
