KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The most notable event of the week for one AFC West favorite came when the Oakland Raiders signed their franchise quarterback, Derek Carr, to a five-year contract extension.

The most notable event of the week for the division's other top contender came when the Kansas City Chiefs announced -- one month before the start of training camp -- they were looking to hire a new general manager.

Talk about a tale of two franchises. Carr and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie were all smiles at Friday's news conference to announce the quarterback's contract. Carr, even though he's now the highest-paid player in NFL history, talked about his desire to leave some money for teammates who are also due for a raise. McKenzie talked about his desire to get that accomplished.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs hid behind a prepared statement that didn't explain their reasons for letting go of general manager John Dorsey.

In Oakland, they have a plan. With Carr signed for the long term, McKenzie and the Raiders are free to secure some of their other good, young players such as linebacker Khalil Mack, offensive lineman Gabe Jackson and wide receiver Amari Cooper.

In Kansas City, the Chiefs don't have a plan or if they do, they need a better one. Looking for a GM with training camp looming should never be a part of the script.

The week's developments in Oakland and in Kansas City won't necessarily determine the course of the AFC West race in 2017 and for years to come. They will make things more difficult for the Chiefs, who tied with the Raiders at 12-4 last season but won the AFC West title because they swept the two games against Oakland.

Both teams until recently looked as if they had sustainability. The Raiders have many good, young players and the financial resources to keep them around for a while. The Chiefs are well coached by Andy Reid and his staff and also have a talented roster that was being continually restocked because of Dorsey's smart drafting. The Chiefs in April drafted Patrick Mahomes II, perhaps giving them an eventual franchise quarterback of their own.

Suddenly, it's natural to wonder about the Chiefs, who don't look as if they're being guided by any well-thought-out plan. Early in June, they released their most accomplished and experienced wide receiver, Jeremy Maclin, two years after signing him as a free agent.

Now, after discussing a contract extension with Dorsey earlier in the offseason, they're looking for his replacement. That task is more daunting given the mixed results from chairman Clark Hunt in hiring GMs. Dorsey was a good hire. The previous general manager, Scott Pioli, was not.

Hunt needs to get this one right. The Chiefs have to keep up with their rivals in Oakland, who have a general manager, money to burn and a smart plan.

The Chiefs, for the moment, have none of the three.

Siemian had no offensive line and he can spin the ball. He is a smart kid and Kubes recognized this about Trevor. Trevor is a system QB no doubt but when he is given the time(which there weren't many granted) he picked D's apart and started to show this once WR corp called him out in the press. But what DT and Sanders failed to realize was their o-line was that bad and he was struggling to get time to get them the ball.

Kubes and Elway had a gentleman's parting of the ways with Kubes health being the smokescreen as the reason and a reasonable one but it was not the main reason. Kubes used a 7th rd pick on Siemian who has shown promise and improvement and Elway used a 1st on Lynch who has yet to show improvement and brain capacity to embrace the NFL game. Elway knew Kubes would probably go with Siemian again to start, knowing his pick Lynch was still not ready and Elway did not like Kubes offense and what he tried to do with Manning in the 1st half of that season IMHO and became increasingly frustrated with Kubes offense during the 16 campaign. So because Elway must save face at all costs he basically tells Kubes that Lynch "will start in 17"(knowing Kubes will not like and probably resign) and Kubes say's okay and I'm outta here then and his health is a good reasonable smokescreen. Of course my theory here. So Elway must now find a good yes man that is a good D coordinator to fill Wade's spot. And lo and behold the Broncos have their version of Herm Edwards in Vance Joseph IMHO just watch. Elway runs the offense now make no mistake about that.

Stop trying to hype up a 7th rounder that threw 18 TD's. Saying he's as good or better than Alex after one below average season is absurd.

It's also very common for young QB's that have early success to regress. More common than any other position. He won't acknowledge that though.

Agreed. Just ask Cam !! I say when it comes to NFL QB development Winston is in the process of learning and knowing the NFL game better than Cam at this point being in the league 2 less yrs than Cam and you will see Winston pass him this year if he hasn't already by last year's performance even though Cam is far more athletic than Jameis. The big difference is that Cam still thinks the game is about him whereas Jameis is about the team first. Immaturity vs Mature. HUUUUUUGE !!!!

Raiders are champions of the world..they just spent $25 million on a QB they already had...that cant beat good teams and signed a 300lb retired RB. Their defense still sucks and have no MLB. What exactly did they do to make them world-beaters this off-season?

KC upgraded at NT, get Bailey/Houston back and had an entire off-season to work Hill into the fold. Jones looks like a star.

The Raider hype is getting ridiculous...it look multiple miracle late 4th quarter comebacks for them to beat average teams. This year, their schedule is actually hard...

The Raiders are heading in the right side, not so sure about Denver. Again Reid is signing off of the major moves. PM... Andy Reids guy. Some of the diamond in the rough mid season finds likely more attributed to Dorsey and his staff.
