Just because your sore knee stops being painful in 24 hours doesn't mean it's healed. it just means that for some reason the pain impulses aren't being sent to your brain anymore. The actual damage, if there is any, is still there and cartilaginous/ligament damage doesn't heal in a few days.

On the plus side for you, if the pain does go away in a day or two, it means that it's unlikely that any damage is serious.

Or maybe I'm just interpreting what you're saying incorrectly.

When I hear "broken" I assume broken bones/torn cartilage, etc.

Maybe I should expand my understanding to just not 100% mechanically sound."
