Child actress Dakota Fanning will appear in a controversial new movie featuring paedophile scenes.

War of the Worlds star Dakota, 12, has signed up to appear in Hounddog.

The screenplay calls for Fanning's character to be raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in "underpants" in several other horrifying moments.

A source close to the film said: "The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals.

"In this movie, both things happen." Fanning's mother, Joy, and her Hollywood agent, Cindy Osbrink, see the movie, written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier, as a possible Oscar vehicle for the pint-size star.

But despite Fanning's status as a bankable actress - whose movies, including last year's War of the Worlds have earned more than half a billion dollars since 2001 - the alarming material seems to have scared off potential investors, according to the New York Daily News.

The film charts the life of a girl who is abused and finds solace in the music of Elvis Presley.

Fanning's carefully choreographed rape scene has already been filmed. But then the production - which also stars Robin Wright Penn, David Morse and Piper Laurie - was stopped because of a lack of money.

But emergency investors were found and the movie is set to be finished by the end of the week.

"It's not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress," Fanning's agent, Osbrink, said.

"And I've never been so proud of her in my life. In every scene she gets better and better."

This girl is getting raped by a monster herself- only this monster is a physcial being. If you don't want to watch it- then don't buy a ticket.

Another thought. What if this movie, somehow, someway prevents 2 children from being molested themselves? What if seeing a movie like this helps them say something about whats going on in their world, would people still think it shouldn't be made?

FTR I'm not arguing the movie shouldn't be made. Let's say though that this movie fucks this little girl up for life, but saves 2 people from being molested themselves. Since 2-1=1 less person fucked up, does that make it okay?

Perhaps a better thing would be what if it helps some children cope with being in families with sexual abuse? Say for example a child is raped as a one time act, what if those victims (whom I'm sure would be allowed to see something like this), would use this as a tool to help cope with their trauma?

Just something to think about.

Good lord- it's called ACTING!!! She's role playing with a hundred people standing around her all the time, including her parents. Name one actor who's been *****ed up by doing a scene in their entire lifetimes. They thought the same about Linda Blair- too many parent's groups were saying the poor girl would be seeing demons her entire lifetime.

The sad thing is- none of you peeps have ever seen the movie Happiness. Happiness is an outstanding film and one of the characters is a father who's a pedophile. It makes you sick to watch it, but the film has merit. But, you wouldn't know that 'cause you haven't seen it yourself.

Eyes Wide Shut comes to mind. Though I agree with you that it is acting, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise split up, and both of them say it was because of some of the content and the acting they had to do with each other in that movie.

Yea- but that's called watching each other naked during the entire film. I'd probably get tired of seeing my wife naked for 12 hours a day and then going home and trying to get it up for six months.

There's been a many break-ups between actors and their careers. Often times, it has everything to do with the long hours away and all the traveling and not being together enough.

Yeah good point. I've never acted so I wouldn't know if it had any real effects on kids. However we don't always see behind the scenes how certain situations effect actors and actresses. I mean who knew that Ashley Judd was depressed all these years? We just heard she was released from treatment for it. I guess my point is, I don't know what effect it would have on someone, it seems like it would though. I made it clear in my original post this was based on opinion. No one has brought anything to the table to make theirs more valid than mine. You don't know any more that she won't be affected than I do that she will. As far as the original post you quoted I was asking a question. IF it does mess her up, BUT it helps other kids not get hurt, is that okay? Is it cool to chuck 1 child under the bus to save a few others?

The mom should be hit in the face with a hammer for allowing this. No decent parent would allow their 12 year old to be Faux-raped. It CANNOT do anything positive for their psychological development.

I don't see how a parent would allow their child to do it, but I also think the film itself might let a lot of people who have experienced something like this cope.

From her parents standpoint, though, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

And I'm not a closet pedophile, just someone who can understand the thoughts and feelings of a person who has gone through something like this.
