Staley is a classic example of teams knowing how important LT is and him being shot up the board due to a few workouts, need picks and workouts shoot him up the board......that's how you get a bust.

I think it has more to do with the fact that he went to a small school and not until he competed recently against top talent was he able to show what he could do.

You do realize we have 1.5 out of 2 starters for DE and 0 out of 2 starters for DT. All we have is depth on the roster. If the war room thinks it's a reach for a DT, then look at WR or OL. Still reaching? We will need 2 CB's real soon and a nickle this year, grab a CB. Still not the right player? Then grab a stud DE. Who do you have in mind that would fall to us? This is all IMO of course but would rather use a later pick on DE.

Joe Staley or Ben Grubbs, which almost guarantees one of those two will be the pick.

Scott Wright disagrees with you.

2. Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan
There is no doubt that Joe Staley is one of the hottest prospects in the draft right now and while you certainly can't discount his talent and great Pro Day workout (he ran a 4.82 forty at 304 lbs.) a big part of the reason is simple circumstances at his position. Basically the supply is just not meeting the demand when it comes to the offensive tackle position and if you don't get one of the Big 3 of Joe Thomas, Levi Brown or Staley there is a chance you won't get a left tackle who can come in and contribute early on. Right now Staley is a lock for the Top 20-25 and depending on how things break down the Top 10 overall is not even out of the question.

I don't disagree with the premise that somebody might take him higher because of a need, but I disagree with the idea that he's only up there because of that. There've been players in recent years who've come from smaller schools, made a splash at workouts, and shown they deserved the jump up the board(Merriman and Ware for example).

But I don't see the Chiefs taking Staley anyway. They usually don't draft the 'hot' prospect. Lately they've drafted for value, getting guys who've fallen past where they should've gone(LJ, DJ, Tamba).

But Scott Wright also considers Staley a top 23 prospect and lists him as such on his Big Board, which contradicts your claim that he is a reach.

Scott has him rated a top 23 prospect because

1) he had great workouts

2) the OT is extrememly thin

He says that plainly in several places on his website. Scott is predicting where he'll GO, not where he DESERVES to go.

I'm just glad we won't have to worry about it, he'll be gone before we pick.

His big board is where he ranks each player regardless of his position. Players don't go up or down on there based on how deep their position is.

"The following are Scott Wright's positional rankings for the 2007 NFL Draft. Please note that where players are ranked does not necessarily reflect where the players may go in the draft, but merely where he personally has them ranked on his board. These rankings are very fluid."
