Torture Devices Through The Ages

After having listened to several of Herm's press conferences and read through many of the pro-Captain Checkdown and Raider fan posts this week, my thoughts turned to torture.

It was in this frame of mind that I commissioned my crack team of spider monkeys to research some of the all time, number one, best-of-breed torture devices so that I might share this information with my fellow Planeteers.

So, with no further ado, agony, or torment, I present to you this thread which I lovingly call, "Torture Devices Through The Ages".

Branks (or The Rosie O’Donuts)

The traditional brank was used mainly to punish women who were labeled as 'scolds' or 'shrews' - those who upset the male-dominated society of their time. The designs were only left up to the imagination of the blacksmith, ranging from those that served to only humiliate the victim to those that actually mutilated the tongue.

Generally, the tortured were locked into the masks and confined to the town square for public humiliation and oftentimes beatings.

The Hanging Cage (AKA Raider Chaise)

The hanging cage or gibbet was a ubiquitous sight throughout Europe. Made of slats of wood or iron, in myriad shapes and sizes, this device served as a simple punishment (the victim was displayed and eventually freed) or a slow, brutal execution (the victim was left to the elements, facing eventual death).

The bodies of executed highwaymen, covered in tar for preservation, were often displayed in these cages along rural routes. It was thought that this presentation would deter other thieves.

The Skull Splitter (or The Randy Cross Cure)

Some examples had handles on the sides, allowing the torturer to jerk the victim from side to side.

The device could be used to provide excruciating pain, or in the extreme, the victim could be hoisted into the air, resulting in removal of the top of the cranium or breaking of the cervical vertebrae.

The newest torture being used by special forces is code-named "ABC Tuesday". They strap you into a chair, tape your eyelids open, and make you watch back-to-back eps of Cavemen and Carpoolers.

I tried to watch both. It was like someone accidentally spilled a big bag of old sitcom clichés and it took an hour to clean up the mess. Two horrible shows.

these days everything's been done (joke wise) it's almost officially becoming cliche to be cliche. but not by choice - by circumstance.
