That goes along with our discussion about scoring, al. That's an error, IMO, but it gets scored a hit and an earned run. Not that I'm complaining as a Royals fan. But I don't think Livan Hernandez feels the same way.

generally, the infielders get almost no slack at all, to the point where its only an infield hit if no human being on the planet could reliably make the play. However, outfielders are given EVERY benefit of the doubt. It has to be a blooper reel play for an outfielder to get a fielding error.

and as a weird theoretical exercise, if we would have scored that double as an error, then Olivo's single would have probably made that 1st run still count as earned.

You're right, but that logic makes my head hurt.

ok Trey, we all like Zack, but if anybody gets on base at all, he's gotta come out. We dont really need 120+ pitches from him to beat the Twins tonight.

I was just thinking that once you trot someone out there, there's this insane need to let him finish the inning, and pitch counts get elevated. Luckily, he got through it pretty efficiently.

He didn't get a glove on it (at least it didn't look like it on my 3 inch tv here in the studio....), that's often the line of demarcation.

You'd never have inside the park homers if goofy plays like that were considered errors...

You're right - he didn't get close to it. I just think that was a pretty routine play to make, but I can see the relative logic of calling it a hit.

All part of the beauty of baseball. You can get in these discussions and sometimes the scorer bears you out and other times not.

WTF Happened? I leave for a little bit with the Royals winning thinking the hapless streak is over. And I come back to find out they give up 6 runs the last 2 innings and they lose.
Just take all these guys out and shoot them please.

I wish they'd start making some changes, even cosmetic ones just to shake things up. Dayton would probably not do it, thinking it reeks of panic and desperation, which it might, but my God, what a demoralizing time.

I dunno, fire Barnett the hitting coach, he's a handy scapegoat (although they scored 8 tonight). Can TPJ, play Callaspo and/or call up Aviles, bring up Maier, bench or trade Teahen (whose value is probably nil) ... whatever.

And of course you gotta be some kind of sick uber-nerd to care about those finer scoring details. I obviously plead guilty and carry my nerd-card with pride.

Like I said right after it happened, this is some of the worst outfield play I've seen.

(Not long after that, a guy tried to throw Gordon out at home, which was, to me at least, another bad fundamental play...)
