Panthers could franchise Peppers

Defensive end Julius Peppers let the Carolina Panthers know he is looking for a change of scenery.

"The front office has been informed of my desire to explore opportunities with other NFL teams following the expiration of my contract next month," Peppers said in a statement released by his agent Carl Carey. "At this point in my NFL career, I am seeking new challenges that will allow me to grow, develop and reach my personal potential on the football field.

"I strongly feel that making a move at this time is in my best interest. I appreciate the entire Panthers organization and am thankful for the seven seasons I've spent with the team."

The Panthers would have to pay Peppers, 28, nearly $17 million to franchise him for the 2009 season. Peppers has been in Carolina his entire career, seven seasons.

"Julius is firm in his decision that he needs a change," Carey said. "He feels that he can thrive in another system. While he has been selected to four Pro Bowls and designated as an All-Pro during his career, he feels that he has yet to develop to his full potential. This is the case of a great player who seeks to become an elite one."

Senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen contributed to this report.

According to Sirius NFL radio, Carolina says they will franchise tag him. Problem is, they are only 11mil under the cap. If they tag him, they would have to cut some big salaries, plus, they would lose Gross. Looks like a lose lose situation for the Panthers.

Won't happen. Feel free to dream though.
well jesus christ our pass rush was so bad last year a team with Brady, Moss, and AP wouldn't have won more than 2 games. what if our offense takes even bigger strides next year, becomes one of the best in the league, we know how good our secondary is, we get better against the run, make the playoffs, but lose in the first round because we can't sniff the qb? Or maybe don't make the playoffs because of no pass rush..you can make big strides in one off season in the NFL..I say grab him

I'd sat adalius Thomas and Roosevelt colvin, when they were signed, were among the hottest free agents those years. So he has done it.

he had 10.5 sacks in 05 and then 13 sacks in 06. last year was an anomaly because of an injury and then 14.5 this season.

so you're saying 10.5 to 13 is a decline? and 13 to 14.5 is just a contract year bump?

Hey Gross is another one we should perhaps seriously look at.

I seriously doubt any team out there is going to want to put a guy who's 6'7 280lbs at OLB.
Just about every team today, plays some form of hybred 3-4. Giants usually call it against top rbs. they don't use it all the time.

Here's something very interesting. The Steelers might switch to a 4-3. Tomlin came up coaching the 4-3 scheme. His defensive scheme won him a ring. Then, when Tomlin moved to the Vikings, in no time, the defense was number one against the run. Lebeau (sp) defensive coordinator for the Steelers is a 3-4 guy.

Right before the 2008 draft, Tomlin said that he wants to draft smaller and faster defensive linemen. It makes a lot of sense, the Steelers lose too many games against strong 4-3 teams. Guess this years draft will provide the answer.
