Cassel or Sanchez?

I realize that we are where we are, but the more I see about Sanchez, the more I'm afraid that a few years down the road, we may look back and realize that we passed up on the franchise guy that we've been looking for. I know that Cassel played ok last year, but is he a franchise guy? ...likely not. Thoughts?

He hasn't signed a contract. That, in and of itself, means nothing definitive, you're absolutely right.

By the same token, the fact that we traded for him - when combined with the fact that he doesn't have a contract - does not mean anything definitive either. Despite the protestations from the "Cassel is our QB" crowd.
I would say that because Pioli and Haley had confidence in him may be considered "Simply becaue we traded for him" has something to do with my excitment of him coming to KC. I respect their Opinions.

But I think his play last season plays more of a part in my opinion that he can lead us to the future.

As for the crowd that says he won't have Moss or Welker....I'm sure Pioli and Haley aren't going to leave him out on the field with toy soldiers to play with. They will get him help, whether it be coaching up the guys we already have or obtaining new weapons.

Are you willing to at least give him a chance? Or are you totally against him just for the sake of argument?

I'm absolutely willing to give him a chance. In fact, I'm fairly convinced that he's our QBotF.

However, the absolutes being thrown around in regards to the guy really bug me.

I'm not a draftnik but what the point of trading for Matt Cassel and paying him 14 mio dollars for one year if you don't plan on him in the future. Otherwise there could have signed Byron Leftwich or Jeff Garcia as a stopgap solution.

But he does have a contract. He is signed for one year at franchise numbers. He's not an unsigned free agent. That's why this is a useless thread until the draft: Cassel is the team's QB going forward until something changes that.

As an aside, I have nothing against your hesitation regarding Cassel. I just think it's something that really has no potential for much discussion until after the draft, barring some sort of trade.

For one year, hence the double-standard comment.

Like I said, it wouldn't really be a topic of discussion if people didn't talk about the situation like it's not fluid, because it is.

Because he gives you 1 year of manageable play while you get your drafted QB ready? Because he gives you the possibility of drafting a QB and having 2 guys that might be franchise-caliber players? Because you kept him out of the hands of a division rival? Because you thought you could get him for a 2nd rounder and trade him for a late 1st?

What's the point of trading for Matt Cassel and making him you're QBotF if you're not going to give him a long-term deal?

Well, it may or may not be fluid. You're speculating that it is. I would expect that your speculation is, at least, largely correct, but it's still opinion, not fact.

That's my point:

NOTHING is fact, other than we know that he doesn't have a long-term contract in place.

I'm not the one suggesting that something is there that's not. That belongs to the people suggesting that Cassel is it, we're set, and that's all there is to it. They're speculating just as much as anybody else, only they don't act like it.
