High Cholesterol

Had my blood work done Monday, get a call from the doctors office at 5:30 stating they need to talk to me ASAP, but would not tell me what about. SOB's had me thinking the worst all night, BS to say the least.

Ended up being high cholesterol, and when I say high I mean like 740's. I am 32, seems like something could be off, but they are giving me meds and told me to diet for 3 months and would check again.

Anyone dealt with this shit before? I know I need to get back in shape. Don't like salads, or much fruit. Any advise would be great.

740? I don't want to worry you, but perhaps you shouldn't be starting any long books.

That's not a diet thing. That's a genetic thing. A guy at my high school reunion told me that his cholesterol level was at 900 at one point, but by then he'd already had two heart attacks before age 40. I think at that level it's all about medication, because I suspect it can't be controlled with diet. (I'm sure diet will be part of the solution too, though.)

Granted, I'm not a doctor. But I do know about that one guy at my reunion, which kind of counts as research.

I think you heard wrong. 740 is the equivalent of running a temp of 120. Cholesterol is a farce anyway. It was invented by the AMA to sell you drugs. Whatever you do, stay off the statins.

Smitty, once you start eating a more veggies, you should start liking them much better.

I am the guy that used to think a balanced meal, was a double cheeseburger in each hand, with fries in your lap.

It worked for me, I get cranky if we don't have at least two veggies with every meal.

Doc told me I had high cholesterol 320+ or there about. Gave me lipitor which I can't afford, even with the 'discount' progam they offer. He also had me get this book. Basically my diet should consist of lean meats, veggies, fruits, some nuts, whole grains and so on.

Doc said mine is most likely genetic. Said diet and exercise in my case probably will not lower enough to in the 'safe zone' which is why he prescribed me Lipitor.

I wouldn't take Lipitor if you paid me to take it. There is a ton of information out there on why this drug is horrible for you and a reason for all the advertisements by Pfizer recently. DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE PEOPLE!!!

And those drugs won't lower your cholesterol 500+ points. There's something else going on here.

Oatmeal and oat bran

Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes.

Soluble fiber appears to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines. Ten grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you'll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steel-cut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran.

Walnuts, almonds and more

Studies have shown that walnuts can significantly reduce blood cholesterol. Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, walnuts also help keep blood vessels healthy and elastic. Almonds and some other nuts appear to have a similar effect.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, eating about a handful (1.5 ounces, or 42.5 grams) a day of most nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts, may reduce your risk of heart disease.

But all nuts are high in calories, so a handful will do. As with any food, eating too much can cause weight gain, and being overweight places you at higher risk of heart disease. To avoid gaining weight, replace foods high in saturated fat with nuts. For example, instead of using cheese, meat or croutons in your salad, add a handful of walnuts or almonds.

740? That's high, but you have to realize that the way cholesterol is calculated is a combination of both HDL and LDL. Do you know the ratios?

BTW, I'd agree with staying off statins. Get yourself some high quality fish oil and take 10000 per day before getting re-checked.

BTW, was this fasted, or a post-prandial reading? How long before getting checked did you have your last meal?

I figured out a couple of years ago that my favorite foods are carbohydrates and cholesterol, washed down with a carb laden ice cold beer. I'd probably like beer even more if it contained animal fat.
