Cassel just had one of the shittiest first halves ever.

All he did was dump the ****ing ball off.

His QB rating is 95.3.

Henceforth, any defense of Cassel using the QB rating statistic will be completely ignored and ridiculed.

This has been a public service announcement.

In general the WR's corps are below average, the pass rush isn't that good, the QB play is very poor. All three of those are holding the team back from a deep playoff run.

Worse, any move we make to upgrade at QB could take a couple seasons to be effective (whether via draft or another team's backup, which seems to be our m.o.), and in the meantime, other elements of the team will probably deteriorate.

My hope is that the next couple seasons go like this: Maintain our secondary, because it is good enough for us to win a championship. Upgrade the LB's, and this position will need some serious attention. I'm actually feeling pretty good about the defensive line (except Tyson Jackson, he is awful) that I think we can probably just augment a couple pieces, maybe like replacing Ron Edwards with another serviceable backup. Draft a center because I don't know how many more seasons Weigmann has in him, and leave the rest of the offensive line alone so we can have Albert, Asamoah, Lilja, new center, and Barry Richardson as our OL. Obviously, upgrade the QB position. I would hope through the draft, but like you said, we honestly only need an average QB to win with this team. I'm no fan of grabbing another team's backup, but if it happens, I just hope we find someone who is capable of hitting receivers in stride and who doesn't panic nearly half as much as Cassel in the pocket. Then we need to get a WR to replace Chambers, so we could have Bowe, new WR, McCluster, and Moeaki as our receiving threats. I'm pretty happy with that.
Finally, I think Jones probably has a couple season left in his tank because he's shown he has crazy durability, but we have to be thinking about a replacement. I love the balance of the running game this year, and I think we need to maintain that for our championship run.

So it is possible to maintain this team long enough for a different QB to make a championship run. I just hope we make the right moves. I'm tired of how many different Chiefs teams I've watched that were lacking in one crucial element of the game that prevented us from being as good a team as we need to be to win it all.
Pretty good take there. And I agree completely that as much as some fans want a promising rookie QB to be drafted as a possible QBOTF, the way the rest of the team is quickly exceeding expectations I can see them going with another vet castoff after the season.

With the way the rest of the team is playing, it would make sense for them to plug someone in who's got experience. Just to try and ride the momentum the rest of the team has produced.

agree, but over the long term, a franchise qb would be nice... Even though the chances of getting one are slim to zero most of the time...

I completely disagree.

When you can routinely put up 175 yards on the ground while your defense plays "within" itself, as long as the QB can put up respectable numbers and keep the opposing defenses honest, you can go a long way.

The Patriots of 2001 had the 24th ranked overall defense (6th in points) and I don't believe they had a pass rusher like Hali, yet they won the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs are currently 13th in points given up. They're most certainly starting to resemble the 2001 Patriots on the defensive side of the ball.

There is absolutely no reason we can't do both.

Sign a vet to play now and groom a drafted QBOTF...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

How often do you see franchises lockup a shit ton of money to set a Rookie QB on the bench for Grooming purposes?

I would rather draft a bad ass QB and put his ass on the field. let him "learn the ropes" while leading this team to the playoffs and superbowls...

but thats just me...

5th? I suck at NFL.com.

And while I thought that Charlie Weis would be a gigantic difference maker, I completely underestimated Romeo Crennel's impact this season.

Might it be possible that we underestimated how truly bad Pendergast was, and the play of DJ, Dorsey, Hali, and Flowers??

I think it was the perfect storm.

A lot of young talent - DJ, Dorsey, Hali, Flowers, Carr, Belcher - that had been directed by mongoloids for most of their career.

Throw in the Yoda of defense and suddenly they all "get it." The lightbulb goes on for all of them.

Add in Berry, Lewis, Shaun Smith and you have a solid lineup. Maybe even Tyson Jackson can be a solid 3-4 DE, if overpaid.

Now if we can replace Edwards and Vrabel we'll REALLY have a defense.

Flowers is enough of a stud to shine through even Clancy's toilet water. But as to the rest, I would say yes.
