Ugh...Don't You Hate It When People Invite Themselves?

So my wife and I are taking our kids on an overnight trip out-of-town this weekend to a hotel/waterpark. Thought it would be a fun, end-of-the-summer getaway for the family and we got a great deal. It was a spontaneous thing we decided on a couple of days ago (which makes it more fun) and I've really been looking forward to it.

Today, my wife tells me some friends of ours, and their kids, are going too. Guess my wife and her friend were talking this morning and my wife mentioned what we were doing. The other couple then checked it out and decided to go too, pretty much inviting themselves. Don't know if they came out and directly asked if it was OK or not. My wife is pretty passive when it comes to that stuff though so she probably didn't do anything to discourage them from going if they hinted at it.

I mean, it will probably end up being OK. It'll certainly make it easier to entertain the kids, and our kids will surely love having their friends along. Plus, it's not like we don't get along with this other couple.

I guess I just hate feeling restricted on what we do and when we do it and I'm certain that will happen. I was also looking forward to the quality family time with just us.

OK, venting over...

It's a public establishment. I don't consider that 'inviting themselves'.

Right, it is a public place. They can do what they want. But, their intent is to hang out with us. Surely you guys know it's much harder to accommodate 10 people than it is 5.

For example, part of the deal includes a buffet breakfast in the morning. If it was just us, we'd go down and eat whenever we felt like it. If we felt like sleeping in, we could. If we felt like starting our day early, we could. Now though, we have to go through the whole process of figuring out a time to meet for breakfast. Then we'll likely have to set an alarm to make sure we're on time, etc.

I guess my idea of a "vacation" is freedom. Do what you want, when you want. With another family, it's harder to do that.

I completely understand what you're saying, and this happens to me all of the time. It's always a pain in the ass when you're with more people. I just went to vegas with 4 other couples....I understand.

That said, I think you're making a bigger deal of this than life dictates you should. My friend and his 3 kids who lost their wife and mother last night, would tell you to go have a great time, enjoy the trip and make the best of what isn't a bad situation at all in the big picture.

You're going to a resort with plenty to do, not sharing a cell in a Turkish prison.

Thanks.

The point is, there are things to be upset about, and things NOT to be upset about.

Go enjoy your weekend with your family and friends.

Totally get what you're saying. Great advice.

Probably more of one of those situations where it's really annoying for a couple of hours, then as time passes, you realize it's not so bad.

I'm a pretty laid back, go with the flow kind of guy. Normally, "change" doesn't bother me one bit, but one of my character flaws I've noticed is that, for whatever reason, I have a tendency to envision how stuff (an evening out or a vacation) is going to go. I kind of plan it out in my mind and when that plan gets deviated from, it really throws me off.

Enough with the Dr. Phil stuff though. I'm certain it'll be a good time.

**** that. Just do your own thing. If you feel bad about that, say something like, "We're going to sleep in & catch a late breakfast. Maybe we'll see you there." That should let them know they're on their own in a very nice way.

We just went to Vegas with another couple & we did some things together, but I don't think anyone felt like obligated to hang out.
