Teicher: Bills never intended to hurt Berry last season

Coach: Bills never intended to hurt Berry last season
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
Buffalo coach Chan Gailey said the Bills didn’t intend to injure Chiefs safety Eric Berry in last year’s game between the teams.

Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson leveled Berry with a cut block at the knees on one of the first plays of last year’s game, which was the season opener. The result was a torn ACL that ended Berry’s season.

Berry later tweeted that he thought the Bills were out to get him, though he subsequently said he was only joking.

The Chiefs and Bills play one another again Sunday in Buffalo.

“I hate he feels that way because there was never any intention,’’ Gailey said Wednesday. “We never talked about it. It was never even discussed. Our guys were just hustling and trying to make blocks. It was unfortunate it happened. He’s a great player and I’m glad to see him back on the field.’’

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said he believed Berry was over the incident.

“I know Eric has mentioned that last year, during the offseason, I think it was,’’ Crennel said. “He hasn’t mentioned anything this year other than trying to win the game.

“I don’t think Eric has difficulty going up against anybody. He enjoys the game. He wants to play the game and he wants to play it at a high level.’’

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Tamba Hali will return to practice Wednesday. He didn’t play in the Chiefs’ season-opening loss to Atlanta because he was serving a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

“I hope I see the effort he gives on every play (and) what he brings to the table as far as pass rush goes,’’ Crennel said. “I hope he hasn’t forgotten anything and that he can step right in and move right along.

“The way he approaches the game and the way he plays down in and down out, that impacts the guys around him. They want to play up to the level he plays. When you get guys playing up to the level that he plays, then you can lift the team.’’

If it were the regular refs, I imagine that they would be watching extra close to make sure there were no retaliations on Johnson. However, with the scab refs - who knows?

Even if we had regular refs, it doesn't matter. I expect, or want, somebody to try to turn his knee sideways.

Fines be damned.

Don't give a **** what he intended to do.

I just hope for once the Chiefs will man up and kick some ass instead of being a bunch of pussies.

No, i don't expect anyone to take Stevie Johnson's knee out. I do hope they knock the holy **** outa him though.

When he crosses over the middle they should waste him even if they get a penalty.

getting revenge for a cheap shot is not the same as a team organized pay-for-injury situation.

I would have liked to see cut blocks taken out before any "defenseless WR crap".

Half of those hits are BS anyways with the WR crouching himself down to brace for the hit. What do you know? Helmet to helmet.

I am afraid those days are gone, but will be pleasantly surprised if I am wrong.

Did you see any retaliation for the Shawne Merriman hit on Priest?
The Robert Geathers hit on Trent Green?

With free agency and the players union, it is more like a fraternity now, as the guy may be your team mate soon.

With the picks that Atlanta was running, I am surprised there weren't a couple more injuries Sunday.

Hopefully, Berry took $50k and put it in a nice little savings account. All ready for his fine of helmet-to-helmet on a defenseless, bitch-ass receiver.

If Stevie Johnson can add two and two on Monday morning...mission failure.
