Football Outsiders Ranks Matt Cassel 44th of 46 QBs

Giving him a ranking of 463 yards below replacement level.

QBs who finished behind Cassel: Stafford and Russell.

QBs who finished ahead of Cassel: Everyone else in the NFL who threw more than 100 passes.

On a positive note, he was 38/46 on a per play basis, narrowly edging out Josh Freeman.

On another positive note, Brodie Croyle would have finished 25 had he accumulated enough attempts.

Top 5 QBs (In order)

1. Brady
2. Manning
3. Rivers
4. Brees
5. Favre

I don't see how Delhomme comes out ahead of Cassel. Jake had better weapons, the same completion %, but had more than 2x as many TDs to INts as Cassel did.

HARK! The second horseman of the Apo-cassel-ypse has swooped into the thread on his equine terror mount! Avert your eyes from missing the playoffs by one game...he is Deeznutz, horseman of the four interceptions thrown to the Buffalo Bills in a 2005 road game.

BEHOLD! It is the third horseman of the Apo-cassel-ypse, descending upon us like a specter of the kentucky derby! Quiver in fear at the sight of the game manager who wobble launches his team into hell...he is OnTheWarpath58, horsemen of the why the **** are we starting this old guy instead of Croyle?

Then again, he was ranked 17th last year, his first year starting.

Cutler tumbled from 5 to 37. Is it the player or the environment/coaches?

Cassell doesn't have what it takes mentally to be a successful NFL QB. If you watch him throw the ball, assess his knowledge of the game, time his speed, agility, and overall athletic ability, you get what should be a pretty decent NFL QB. But when you actually throw him into the fire and have him use all that in an actual game he shits the bed. What should be a mobile and pocket savvy QB turns into one that lacks pocket awareness and repeatedly makes his O line look like shit (see the number of sacks he took in New England last year). Throws that appear easy for him in a relaxed setting appear next to impossible. Progressions that he can mentally do in his sleep in a meeting room he never gets to in a game.

A good percentage of QB failures are great hardworking, intelligent guys but just don't have what it takes. Compare those type of guys to someone like Brett Favre, who practically won an MVP trophy before he even knew what a nickel defense was. Cassell's not a gamer and likely never will be.

I just wish we could get all four horsemen in the same thread.

depends..

if you like the player, his failure is always the coaches fault, his success is his own, despite the coach..

if you don't like the player, it's the coaches fault for putting him on the team.

if you don't like the coach, the player can do no wrong or is being misused.

if you like the coach, it's the player's fault.

I pretty much agree with all of that. All you can do is hope he improves, it's happened before I guess.

Trent Green went from 25 to 3 once we upgraded the offense in 2002.
