ChiefsPlanet Writer's Group

We started an online critique group for the Fall of 2009 and it ceased just before the holidays. It was a rewarding experience and I just wanted to set up a new announcement for Chiefsplaneteers who love to write and want to consider working with writers on improving our craft or just finding the motivation to write or just for fun. All genres are welcome.

If you're interested in becoming a member of the ChiefsPlanet Writer's Group please feel free to shoot me a PM for the details on how to join.

I'm at work! Getting reviews ready for a client, which means I'm sitting here waiting for movie files to render so I can upload them. Prime surfing time. That or a nap.

You won't believe this, but I've actually written every day in January.

Nice! Kudos to you. I've got an idea I'm toying with for my next piece of writing, but I haven't started on it yet.

I've set a deadline of July 1st to finish (and by finish I mean completely finished, draft and revision) the novel I halfway started in November. And I've told everybody, friends and family and coworkers, everybody knows I'm doing this. I've never actually told anybody about wanting to write before, not in any kind of structured "this is what I'm going to do" way, so I think I'm taking it seriously. Or at least if I flame out, I'm going to flame out in a nice, big way. But I've done a lot of story structure work in the last two weeks, so it seems to be going somewhere.

You've still got to show us the rest of your nanowrimo work.

Will do. It needs a lot of editing though. Of course I wrote the thing in 30 days, 50,000 words- it was certainly a rush.

My deadline was at least 1,500 words/day and that worked out very well for me.

I'm shooting for 100 pages/month starting on Saturday, which would I think come out to around 1,200 words/day. Although I'm going to focus on that goal being the minimum work a day, and working towards exceeding it rather than just reaching it. I know I can do it but the question as you know is will I...

I'm a little more confident now that I'm writing more regularly, but there's still that doubt in the back of my mind. When do I miss a day, and when does it snowball into a week or a month.

Either way, I didn't want to start in earnest in the middle of an editing job; I thought that would be a good way to fail coming right out of the gates.

You should be confident. You're a damn good writer.

Not that kind of confidence - confidence in myself not to slack-off.

But thanks, that's always good to hear!

I write all kinds of comedy.

Unfortunately it's all unintentional.

What sort of material are you looking for? I've made the Best-of-Craigslist a couple of times. Now that's comedy.

I've been doing standup for about a year. I'm doing open mics so I only get about 3 to 5 minutes at a time. So quick one liners and basic setups and punchlines. No long meandering stories that will lose the audiences attention.

Well, Rodney Dangerfield was the absolute best at that.

The only thing I can tell you is that at first, you must study the masters. Just like musicians and writers and artists must first study the masters.

You then try to emulate them.

You then branch out and study the others in the same field- the ones who inspire you to be better.

And you try to emulate them.

You then take your own life and apply it to what you've emulated and before you know it, you're developing your own voice.

Soon after that, you are your own voice.

I have my good nights and my bad nights. Overall it's been a blast. I'm so much better than when I first started. I don't even get nervous on stage anymore.

I can't even imagine how difficult it must be to become a stand-up comedian. What might be funny for a few people might make others go ho-hum. Not to mention, blatantly putting yourself out there in front of others who can clearly laugh with you when you're great or laugh at you when you bomb. It takes a ton of courage to try to be a stand-up comedian- certainly more courage than most other jobs. I think it's great and wish you the best.

I haven't the slightest idea how to write stand-up, but I've always dreamed of writing for SNL or some other comedy show.

I submitted a script for a comedy series contest a year ago- I didn't win it, but I did receive some favorable and encouraging feedback from the judges. They all thought it was worthy of a comedy series, it was just that I needed to hone the craft of scriptwriting.

Anyways, I wish you the best and admire what you are doing, even if I don't find you funny.

Just kidding, of course...
