NFL Combine: Mike Evans, Marqise Lee meet with Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs will meet with two of the top receivers in the 2014 NFL Draft -- USC WR Marqise Lee and Texas A&M WR Mike Evans.

Between the college all-star games (East-West Shrine game, Senior Bowl), the NFL Combine, pro days and pre-draft visits, the Kansas City Chiefs will meet with a lot of players before the 2014 NFL Draft. In fact, GM John Dorsey told reporters that they will interview about 75 percent of the rookies in this draft class.

That said, I admit I was a little excited reading from the KC Star's Terez Paylor and Chiefs Spin's Herbie Teope that the Chiefs were meeting with two of the top receivers in this class.

That would be USC's Marqise Lee and Texas A&M's Mike Evans.

Texas A&M receiver Mike Evans said the #Chiefs were the first team he met with yesterday. Said he talked to WR coach David Culley.

USC WR Marqise Lee said the #Chiefs are one of the teams he will meet with today. Also said has meetings with Jets, Lions.

Lee weighed in at 5'11 and 192 pounds while Evans was listed at 6'4 and 231 pounds. Without knowing a whole lot about each player's game, Lee seems like the more realistic option just knowing what I know about Andy Reid's history of receivers. He doesn't have the history of getting those 6'5 behemoth receivers who tower over everyone. He likes speed. Not that Mike Evans wouldn't work either ... the guy looked like an awesome player in college.

As Dorsey said, the Chiefs interview a lot of players but I do find these two especially interesting. Lee has been mocked the Chiefs regularly since the season ended. AP reader Bsrkr posted about Lee here.
Evans is the No. 7 overall player on the Mocking The Draft top 200 big board while Lee is No. 12. Read the Evans scouting report here and the Lee scouting report here.

I don't quite get this running joke.

How many OL have the Chiefs taken in the 1st, in the past 10 drafts?

The answer is 2.

And one was a trade.

it's not so much of what we've done, but more of the Chiefs are reeruned and will find a way to screw it up.

exactly, It comes naturally to this franchise. If we had drafted Peyton Manning, we would have found a way to **** it up

I don't see how we'd be in range for either of them. Plus as stated before, they're interviewing just about everybody with a pulse.

Mike Evans is the real deal.

My only thing to think about is which would I prefer betwen Odell Beckham and Evans. After Watkins, those are my top 2 WRs. Hopefully one of them falls to KC. I know the Jets would love Mike Evans out there. Perfect fit.

My only concern about Mike Evans is that he doesn't get great separation, or even really good separation. Now, maybe he just has never had to, and he will develop that at the next level... but maybe not.

Alex Smith has shown time and again that he will throw to the open receiver, and no one else. Jump balls just aren't his thing, so I'm not sure exactly how useful Evans would be in this offense with this QB. Of course, he also has sick hands, is tall as shit, with gorilla arms.

I don't see how Evans isn't the #1 WR on the board after that combine. It's not like he doesn't have the production to back up the workout numbers.

Yeah I think Beckham fits our offense better, but I see Evans as a big play guy that will beat a CB one on one in most situations because of his body and ball skills. Evans is also a very smart player.

Working with Manziel he was constantly finding ways to come back to the QB, and help out his guy after the play was broken down. That's an important trait IMO. He averaged over 20 yards per catch which is just insane.

The size, speed ratio is off the charts, and he plays fast as well. It's not a situation like with Baldwin where the guy timed well, but doesn't show up. As for separation concerns, I'm not entirely too worried about it.

He will learn in the NFL how to use his body to get open and use his hands in particular to gain leverage on the DB. Similar to Vincent Jackson, but I think Evans has more upside. Keep in mind he's a RS Sophomore.

Agreed, my first thoughts as well

1. How come Evans doesn't get more separation with that speed and quickness? (3 cone a bit slow 7.08)

2. Alex Smith tried to throw some 'jump ball' type passes to our receivers and they failed to win the battle for the ball. Can't blame him for not doing it much. I wouldn't keep throwing it up if i didn't think your guy was going to win.

I guess I'll say this... If I'm the Jets, or most NFL teams, I take Evans. If I'm the Chiefs... I think I gotta go with Beckham. Plus he gets to join our kick return circus.

That's the problem with having a QB who is just a "space thrower".

If they're both gone, which is very possible, I think I'd look at Pryor, or possibly even Brandin Cooks. I don't care about size, the guy can play.

We're also extremely unlucky. I mean the first time we get the number 1 pick there's no one worth taking. But the previous year was Luck. This year there's a few Quarterbacks and Clowney, Mack, etc
