He hasn't been winning, and this was their way out now. If he was dropping 10 win seasons, they would ride out the bad press.

Northwestern is building a new stadium. They are going for broke and Fitzgerald hasn't been doing well in recent years.

He was there 17 years. Rare in this era.

But Northwestern is moving beyond that bare minimum. They just built a state of the art indoor facility and are spending big money on a new stadium. I think his days were numbered even before this scandal came to light.
