Report: Floyd to take Arizona jobComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services

Tim Floyd will be named basketball coach at Arizona, Mark Asher of Sports 620 KTAR, ESPN's radio affiliate in Phoenix, is reporting according to multiple sources.

Floyd is meeting tonight with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood to work out the final details of the deal and an announcement is expected Thursday, according to sources.

Floyd, 55, has spent the last four seasons at USC with an 85-50 record. He led the Trojans to three NCAA tournament appearances -- including the Sweet 16 in 2007.

Floyd previously coached in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls in 1999-2002 and the New Orleans Hornets in 2004.

He was also the head coach at Iowa State, New Orleans and Idaho.

Lute Olson retired as coach at Arizona prior to the start of the season. Arizona advanced to the Sweet 16 with interim coach Russ Pennell.
He likely brings with him 5-star center Renardo Sidney and 4-star SF Solomon Hill for 2009. That's huge since we don't really have any real 2009 commits with all of Lute's mess and our 3 best players likely gone to the NBA.

You are right. I agree. They have a lot more wealth there, (corporate HQs, etc.). Which translates to more money spent on street-level decoration, lawns, water features, new buildings, etc.

But water is a huge part of it. It's just far more lush there than here.

Memphis may be the reason for Floyd's last-minute holdup.

Fuuuuuuck. I'd much, much, much rather have Pearl.

Floyd's style is just so boring in comparison.

If the guy continues to bring in players and win games, I don't care if he goes to "Four corners" every time down the floor. He's comfortable in the south too, so maybe he's a long term answer. The concern I have is the shady stuff that's gone on out in LA under his watch.

Honestly, at this point, I'm firmly convinced that reputable media outlets are at the point of making things up to compete with the internet. Accuracy no longer matters...we've all been desensitized, and it's now acceptable to report whispers in the wind.

Your guess is as good as mine as to the reliability of this, but http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/...ew-deal-pearl/ shows that Pearl renegotiated with Tennessee.

Scott Drew or bust or other option!

They lost Pearl because they were chasing Floyd. Brilliant.

Welp,

We know that Lon Kruger and Reggie Theus would take the job. As would Josh Pastner. They are all pretty far down our list, but at this point WE are pretty far down our list as well. Which is what makes it hard to know yet where they are headed. I don't think Livengood knows yet what the next step is. Even the boosters are at a loss.

That's what I thought. I wondered how far down Pastner is. Memphis is moving on the their 2nd tier as well it appears. Pitino (very unlikely and went nowhere), Floyd (why not pick one of U of A or Memphis?), Pearl (using Memphis to get an extension?)....not sure where they go next. Drew at Baylor is getting some play for Memphis, but I don't know if they'll want to go there.

Very interesting back-story...

1) Floyd was never going anywhere from the get-go. He used both Arizona and Memphis to get a raise, nothing more.

2) Our AD (Livengood) had Tim Floyd ahead of Capel, Few & Sean Miller. We are just now moving on to those guys. You remember that whole "Capel > Arizona" talk? Guess not, it's been Floyd since Monday. That's comforting as we have more options than I thought, but you have to ask WTF is that coaching board.

It might offer some hope to the Memphis folks, your AD may also have a different ranking than the fans or media has.

Jesus, Arizona can't even get Tim Floyd?

Arizona's "program" may be gone now that Lute is out of the picture.
