Why do you go to a bar/pub/club for the first time?

Ok about to run a "focus group" with some bar owner friends and I want to see if what they THINK brings people into their bars is really the reason....

Would really appreciate you guys telling me what FIRST brings you into a "new" bar and once we have enough ideas I will start a poll...

I know a few obvious ones... know someone who works there. Went to see a band you like. Went to meet friends who already hang there. What else do we have?

(Once we have this sorted out, we'll do another poll on why you come back to particular bars after that first visit)

I think that name is more a sub conscience thing for people, but I do think it has an affect.

So long as the name isn't overly shitty, I feel it doesn't mean much at all. Many popular places couldn't have more generic names.

Problem in Austin is that there are SOOOOO many bars that drink specials are a given...

Here is a sample of tonight's specials just at some of the bars down the street (there are over 80 bars within 10 walking blocks of me, maybe 150 if you expand that to 15 blocks)

$2 wells and $3 domestics

$1 Lonestar Tallboys & 2 Wells $2 Dom

$1 "you call its"

$0.25 wells and $1 triples

So, specials around here are more of a "keeping up with the Jones'" type of deal...

Yes, very much so. Though I wouldn't ever go to that specific bar as long as their tap list is that pedestrian, especially in comparison with some of KC's excellent beer bars.

No band, I'll keep walking a bar is a bar.
Started playing in them on my brothers ID for the first 3 years till I got legal, then another 5 or 6years 6 sometimes 7 nights a week.
A bar is a bar Unless it's the Whiskey (never played there but watch me win the lotto and I will!.

Opinions are going to very greatly depending on if people are single or not.

Personally, I like bars that don't CRANK the music and have good drink specials.

If there is that much competition than you have to think of something that stands out.

Well I am not single, so bars really have zero interest to me. I dont like to be bothered by some skank looking for free drinks or some douchenozzle acting like his is mike tyson.


What I do like is good food, a variety of beers and lots of TV's with different games on.

I really dont like flirty waitress's either. The tip is the same whether or not you flirt. Just be nice and professional.

So I prefer sports bars, good food and lots of different beers...

It's pretty tough to best The Gingerman if you are looking for beer selection in Austin.

I have no idea about Austin anything. The bar that AustinChief linked to was a KC bar, though.

What's a good beer bar in KC where a person could go flying solo?

A cute bartender with a good personality always helps
The crowd it attracts
