Newest Speculation on Mankins to the Chiefs...

Well ladies and gentlemen, the worm may be turning for Logan Mankins. (Pure speculation of course. )

NFL Rumors – Would the Patriots Trade Logan Mankins?

The New England Patriots are waging a war internally against left-guard holdout Logan Mankins…and they’re winning decisively, giving rise to some NFL betting rumors about trading their Pro Bowl lineman The Patriots have always been an NFL team that gambles their own internal constitution against those of players and agents, holding the team above all else.

Tom Brady proved that the right way to get paid by Robert Kraft is to show up for work, say the right things and keep your fingers crossed.

That’s pretty much the opposite of what Mankins did. He hasn’t been seen anywhere near the Patriots except to stir the pot of his contract negotiations. Dan Connolly, who serves as the current starting left-guard next to Matt Light, did a very admirable job against the Bengals on Sunday. Brady suffered just two quarterback hits the entire game, and was protected well enough to enjoy zero sacks.

Which pretty much paints a clear picture for what the Patriots have to do with Mankins, and that’s trade him. Get his disgruntled ass out of New England and in a new uniform so both parties can move forward. So which teams are the best candidates to swing for the fences with Mankins? NFL rumors insist it’s the Cowboys, but the Chiefs are a much more logical landing spot for him.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are the obvious choice to trade for Mankins because they’re desperate. On top of that, they’ve shown a willingness to give up exactly what the Patriots will be looking for in a trade. They’ll pay Mankins while sending a second-round draft pick (or more) to give Tony Romo the type of protection he needs.

The glaring weakness for Dallas was their horrific offensive line play, which needs any help it can find in free agency. Jerry Jones has never been shy when it comes to making trades, and sending Mankins out of the division and the AFC would be seen as a smart move, especially if they can get a good draft pick in return.

New York Jets

The Jets clearly need someone better than Matt Slausen at their own left-guard spot, but they’ll have to send a boat load to make the Patriots trade Mankins in the division. Still, as the McNabb trade proved, it isn’t beyond reason for teams to trade Pro Bowlers to a big rival. The Jets have to do something to give Sanchez a fighting chance because Slausen is a huge liability on the offensive line.

Kansas City Chiefs

Pioli loves acquiring Patriots and is more than willing to give up draft picks and money to get them. With the Chiefs riding a clear wave of momentum after upsetting the Chargers on Monday Night. Brian Water hold down the fort at left-guard for the Chiefs right now, but at 33-years old the youth movement in Kansas needs someone to replace him.

Hell, he gave Matt Cassel $63 million when he came over from New England. There’s no way he’d pass up a chance to protect that investment by paying Mankins the $45 million or so that he wants.

I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve to be paid like one of the best lineman in the league. He does. It’s just that the Patriots don’t need him like they need Tom Brady which is why their wallet will stay closed as their ears remain open to NFL rumors and trade options teams like Chiefs and Cowboys float his way.

I still think that the right tackle position is Richardson's to lose.

Let him play 16 games and if there isn't a proof of growth, move him back to swing tackle and bring in someone else as a starter in 2011.

If you trade for Mankins, you better be sure that Asamoah is a bust.

If we can get 3-4 good years out of Lilja and Asamoah works out, I'm not terribly concerned with addressing the line other than drafting a center.

If we were to emerge out of the first 2 rounds of 2011 with a combination of Michael Floyd/Julio Jones/Baldwin and say Kris O'Dowd, I'd be a very happy camper.

I think Barry Richardson can get it done at RT. He just needs time at the spot, just like Berry and Lewis need time at S.
Asamoah doesn't need to be a bust for this to be good, imo. Mankins is a Pro Bowler. Waters and Weigman are not going to be around much longer. We need talent and depth. Let the coaches figure out where the pieces go. As I said before, Mankins played LT throughout college. He may prove to be more versatile than some may think. Pioli is familiar with Mankins and I trust him to make the right move either way. (BTW, I've got nothing against Richardson.) Time will tell.

To me, Richardson is still a good 80% tackle, but not really starter quality on a good line.

When he gets his hands on a defender, he neutralizes him almost every time and is a damn good run blocker. My problem with him is, he doesn't always have the mental ability to know who to block and is slow to react when he makes a mistake.

Maybe he just needs time and experience.

Or maybe he just doesn't have the ability to do so and that is why he fell on draft day and still struggles to know who to block.

I value line play as much as almost any poster (that doesn't know what Okungs balls taste like) and would prefer us to take a tackle in the third round or sign a vet to man th position if Barry doesn't show by years end he has that mental ability to take the next step.

I really like Asamoah and think he can play any of the three interior line spots effectively. He could be a good center IMO.

If he can do that, it could be HUGE for our line.

I've brought this up several times in the past but Richardson started 40 games at left tackle for some pretty good Clemson teams.

For the past three years, the Chiefs have shuffled him back and forth from the left to the right sides of the line, which require a different skillset. I think Richardson is more than smart enough to be a right tackle and he has the size and strength to be dominant. He just needs more reps.

If he doesn't improve throughout the course of the 16 game season, look elsewhere for a starter. But hopefully, he'll continue to ascend.

I wouldn't doubt it if Belichick has certain deadlines in his mind when it comes to doing things. And, for Mankins, he might've said, "If this mother****er doesn't sign by Game One, he's dead to me." Because as soon as they beat Cincy, these rumors popped up... and notice how, as soon as they beat Cincy, the morning ink was barely dry concerning Monday Night Football when Belichick shipped Maroney's ass to Denver. He's also the guy who once shipped his starting safety (Lawyer Milloy) to Buffalo before the first game of the season.

I think the relationship between Mankins and the team is too fractured to repair, so I think they should just get it over with and trade him already. At this point, as a Pats fan, I'd take whatever help we can get in the form of players at the LB, CB, or RB position. Either big fish in an equal trade, or little fish with a draft pick, whatever.

do you know how his starting career in Clemson ended?

He got benched for a true freshman iirc.

I have never liked him, but am definitely willing to give him a real chance. He is better than Ocal...that much is certain and that makes him our best RT at the moment so we might not have a choice.

Pioli knew what he was doing in constructing this deal to where if he doesn't improve, he's gone. He has a $7.5 million roster bonus due to him in March 2011 if he's still on the team. He's not seeing that money either way. If he's good this year, they renegotiate that deal, if he's the same Cassel as last year, he's gone.
