Well...this is somewhat anticlimactic...

Not that it's unexpected, but I feel mildly let down with the new server. I mean, we don't really have any new toys to play with in terms of features or anything. It just works. I've gotten so use to screwing with it in the background every night that now it's like I don't have anything to do.

Don't get me wrong - it's a good thing - just not as much fun as it seems like it should be. Maybe I need to find some new stupid add-on to install just for fun.

How about one of your patented B-17s? You could fly around and drop bombs on posters.

Once the test forum is how we want it... we can export/save most of the changes, upgrade the actual forum and apply the changes all at once..

That seems like the most painless path to take...

I will probably start on that ASAP so we can take as long as we need to to get it perfect.

Any thoughts?

Oh, and here are the features for the new version..

http://www.vbulletin.com/index.php?do=features

I am probably going to get the full SUITE even if we don't end up using the CMS, BLOGS, or PUBLISHING features... although I would LOVE to have some of you guys write articles if anyone is willing.
Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. Based on what I know about vB 4, it's gonna take some major work from a visual standpoint to get it looking good again. They've changed the styles system pretty significantly, so I'm not even 100% sure that we''ll be able to start out with our current style - it may be a "ground zero" setup - so a test server would be nifty.

Heh...that would probably cause the place to implode from all the whining. I have considered doing something like "Donate $5 and get to implement one mod abuse for a week or something like that. It's have to be COMPLETELY manual though, so I doubt it would work very well. It'd pretty damn funny, though.

I just keep trying to figure out something that would be an actual benefit for Supporters without restricting any access to content.

Heh...our server load is currently sitting at 0.23. Before, it typically hung around 3-4 on an average night. And for the record, anything under 4.0 is nifty on our new server, and anything under 2.0 was fine on the old box.

Aren't there templates out there that people have put together that you can download and give the option to each user on what theme they want to use?

Im probably dont understand the whole thing, but it seems like there would be.

I remember when CP went through a drastic visual change about 2-3 years ago and everyone was all mad, but then we got over it after a few days.

You can have lots of different styles, but it gets to be an enormous pain in the ass to make changes to the site if you have to do them in a bunch of different places. Right now, we have five different styles, so (for example), if I wanted to add a new link under "Chiefs Links" up top, I have to do it in five different places.

Also, "canned" styles look like shit, plus they completely destroy any "brand" you've built. For example, you'd know you were on the Orange Mane even without the logo and colors just because of the way their templates are set up.
