Bucs Dominik on Chiefs short list

BUCS’ DOMINIK ON CHIEFS’ SHORT LIST
Posted by Aaron Wilson on January 6, 2009, 9:04 p.m.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers pro personnel director Mark Dominik first caught the eye of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt when he was a scouting intern in 1994. Nearly 15 years later, Hunt is reportedly seeking a bright, young executive.

And he believes that Dominik could fit that profile, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Now that Dominik’s career has progressed, the 37-year-old has emerged as a candidate for the Chiefs’ General Manager vacancy created by Carl Peterson’s resignation.

Per the report, Dominik has been informally talking with the Chiefs for several weeks.

Dominik faces stiff competition, though, for the position from Scott Pioli of the Patriots, as well as Chris Polian of the Colts and Jimmy Raye of the Chargers.

Unless Pioli formally declines overtures from the Chiefs, however, Dominik most likely will not be offered a job.

That said, he could join the Chiefs as a lateral hire after his contract expires in May, if the new G.M. is willing to hire him.

Yep. I'll be very disappointed if he gets the job. I want someone from an organization who values the quarterback position.

That's putting it mildly. This is the one that REALLY puts the sickness in my guts; it's so perfect in it's mediocre horror, it just SCREAMS Kansas City Chiefs.

Dominik A Candidate For Chiefs G.M. Position

By: Scott Reynolds

January 4, 2009 @ 9:40pm

Bucs director of pro personnel Mark Dominik, who grew up in Kansas and graduated from KU, has emerged as a candidate for the Chiefs G.M. position. Dominik has spent the last 14 years in the Bucs' pro scouting department. ALSO: Raheem Morris interviews in Denver for the head coaching job on Monday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who interviews for the vacant Broncos head-coaching job on Monday in Denver, may not be the only member of the Buccaneers headed to the AFC West.

NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reports that Bucs director of pro personnel Mark Dominik is one of the candidates Kansas City owner Clark Hunt is considering for the Chiefs general manager position. Carl Peterson stepped down at the end of the season in Kansas City after serving as the team’s president and general manager since 1989.

According to Schefter, other candidates for the Chiefs general manager position include New England executive Scott Pioli, Indianapolis vice president of football operations Chris Polian and San Diego director of player personnel Jimmy Raye.

Dominik has ties to the Kansas City area, growing up in nearby Lawrence, Kans. and graduating from the University of Kansas. Dominik got his start in pro football with the Chiefs as a scouting intern in 1994 before being hired by the Buccaneers to work in the pro scouting department in June 1995. Dominik has quite a front office resume` having worked for Peterson, Terry Bradway and Bill Rees in Kansas City for a year a half before coming to Tampa Bay where he worked for general manager Rich McKay and personnel men Jerry Angelo, Tim Ruskell, Ruston Webster and general manager Bruce Allen.

Determining the fate of Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards, whom Dominik worked with in Tampa Bay from 1996-2000, will be the priority for the Chiefs’ new general manager. Dominik has some experience to lean on having worked with some outstanding coaches in his 14-year NFL career, including Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City, and Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay.

After working as an assistant pro scout upon his arrival in Tampa Bay in 1995, Dominik was promoted to the role of pro scout in ’98. In 2000, he was elevated to the role of pro personnel coordinator before being named the team’s pro personnel director in 2004.

Sources in Kansas City have told PewterReport.com that Dominik is a candidate for the vacant G.M. position and that the 43-year old Hunt, who inherited ownership of the team from his deceased father, legendary NFL owner and oil tycoon Lamar Hunt, wants to go with a younger, forward-thinking general manager to replace Peterson, who is 20 years his elder. The 37-year old Dominik seems to fit the criteria and has played a role in Tampa Bay signing former Pro Bowl linebacker Shelton Quarles from the Canadian Football League, signing starting left tackle Donald Penn off Minnesota’s practice squad and helping the team acquire center Jeff Faine and wide receiver Antonio Bryant this year among others.

Like Clark, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen wants to go in a younger direction at head coach after firing the 56-year old Mike Shanahan on Wednesday after coaching in Denver for 14 years. The 32-year old Morris, who signed a two-year extension on Christmas to replace legendary Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, meets Bowlen's criteria and flies to Denver for an interview on Monday. Bowlen has already met with New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo and New England play-caller Josh McDaniels.

His drafts with Gruden have been less than stellar. But they were also without a 1st and 2nd for 3 out of those years due to trades. Some of the picks I think Gruden fell in love with a couple of guys and just couldn't be talked out of it.

Dominik on the radar for the Chiefs GM position
Bucs pro personnel director Mark Dominik is a candidate for the Chiefs general manager position. The talks actually began informally several weeks ago, shortly after Carl Peterson resigned.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt remembers Dominik when he began his NFL career as a scouting intern in 1994. He was hired the next season by the Bucs for a position in their scouting department and has been promoted steadily through the ranks.

The Chiefs would like to hire a GM before deciding what to do with coach Herm Edwards, who is twisting in the wind with one year remaining on his contract. The hiring of the 37-year-old Dominik may afford Edwards another season to get it right.

But Dominik has to wait his turn. The Chiefs are also interested in Patriots executive Scott Pioli, Colts vice president of football operations Chris Polian and Chargers director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, according to NFL.com.

Dominik's contract is set to expire in May. The 43-year-old Hunt wants to go with a younger GM and Dominik is more than ready to assume those duties with some NFL team. It won't happen in Tampa Bay as long as Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen are in power. He's watched Jerry Angelo and Tim Ruskell become general managers of the Bears and Seahawks, respectively, and has seen Ruston Webster and John Idzik promoted to executive positions with other teams.

Dominik has a great eye for talent and was credited with acquiring players like Donald Penn, Antonio Bryant and Jeff Faine, among many, many others through the years.

But Dominik will likely have to wait until Pioli makes a decision on his future before the picture ecomes more clear in Kansas City.

I'm calling it right now. This is the jackass we get and just to prove he's not worthy of the job he'll keep Herm. Clark sucks, we had to wait 20 years to get rid of peterson now we'll have to wait 50 more for Clark to sell the team on his death bed.

Clark Hunt has been here for 3 years and he's already fired the GM that was very close to his Dad. From the sound of it, he's taking the GM search very seriously and, unlike Carl Peterson, he is looking into a LOT of people outside of the Chiefs' network.

I don't understand your blind accusations. It sounds like he's conducting the thorough GM search we all wanted and, by the way, he's heavily pursuing the #1 candidate right now who has no direct connection with the Chiefs' franchise.

All I've seen out of Clark this year is a guy who is to gutless to fire Herm. He wants to hire a big boy to do it for him...........Sorry Clark has to prove me wrong, the ball's in his court and so far I don't think he knows how to dribble.

I don't think he is gutless at all. I think he wants to keep Herm and is orchestrating that. That isn't gutless. I don't think it is right, but it isn't gutless.

Gutless would be firing Herm to appease fans.
