Cowboys keep McCarthy...

Per Schefter...

This just in: Dallas is not making a head-coaching change and Cowboys’ HC Mike McCarthy is returning for the 2024 season, per sources.

I don't need a reason to fire you. I need a reason not to.

Far too many of these owners seem to need a reason to fire these guys without considering the fact that there's really no reason at all to retain them. Why did the Bears keep Eberflus? The Boys McCarthy? Pure inertia.

Every single season these owners should enter the off-season saying "I need a reason NOT to fire this guy" and if they can't come up with one, move on.
Right. They should also weigh heavily whether their guy would get hired elsewhere.

I'm 95% sure McCarthy wouldn't (can't rule out one idiot team). I'm 100% sure Sirianni and Eberflus wouldn't.

And worst of all, they're sticking with their crappy option in a year with exceptionally rare pedigree available. It's a lock they'll all get canned next year, and who knows what coaches will be available then?

Here's what I don't get. There's two home run hires available this year. It's almost certainly SB or bust next year for McCarthy. Why delay the inevitable?

Jerry just wants a coach he can control.

McCarthy is a yes man.

Dallas came out flat against the Packers. At what point is it on the coaching staff?

Guy's 80 years old and starting to look and sound like it.

Jerry - set down your burdens, buddy. You've been a GREAT owner - the Cowboys are relevant because of your commitment to the franchise. They're also mediocre because you refuse to delegate.

Are you THAT hell-bent on re-writing history? Is it that important to you that you're seen as the 'architect' of the early 90s Cowboys? And do you think winning with McCarthy will actually DO that?

I just don't get it.

I'm gonna devils advocate it here. I'd have fired him after last year...but....

An NFL team is like the Titanic or like America. It's a big powerful ship, but corners terrible. Blowing out a HC is like trying to turn around and iceberg quickly.

Now sometimes, it's just not gonna work out and you need to do it. I'd argue, that time for Dallas was last year, but now.....they've won 12 games 3 straight years with Mike.

Are we really sure Jerry is a "We gotta win a SB" guy? In his old age we all think "he wants to win one at all costs"....but maybe he wants to keep the ship moving?

I would be pissed if i was a cowgirls fan. Neither side of the ball manged to make any noticeable adjustments to what the packers where doing. They got their ass kicked drive in and drive out and just come on the field for the next drive ass first.

Well to play with your analogy - the ships gonna move whether you turn the wheel or not. Crank it hard to port and it's STILL gonna keep going forward. But at least you'll start the turn.

If your ship is heading out to see with no heading, the fact that it's gonna take some time to turn around is no reason to just keep it at Flank and hope you eventually circumnavigate the earth...

I do have to admit McCarthy has far exceeded all expectations I had for him when he was hired.

Is it McCarthy or has Micah Parsons just been a god?

Getting Parsons and Lamb at 12 and 17 respectively has saved that franchise. I'm not sure how much of that credit belongs to McCarthy.
