RIP Ol' Dirty Bastard

I know there will be some people that give a shit like I do, I grew up on Wu-Tang. He passed away in the studio today, 2 days before his 36th birthday. It's not shocking, considering the damage he did to his body, but its sad to me regardless.

Yes, as David said, important and relevant to the history of hip hop as a genre. Wu Tang signaled one of the handful of real turning points in hip-hop, with a sound that was against the norm of the time (the norm at the time, 1993, was Dr. Dre's G-Funk West Coast thang). They are one of the most popular and profitable rap groups of all time, and were certainly influential to many artists that came after tham.

In short, they were important and relevant the same way Kurt Cobain was -- to the music. Personally, I'm not a fan of either -- I was never into Wu Tang (I much prefer the G-Funk style), and I think Nirvana sucked as a band (good lyrics, lousy music), but that doesn't change the fact that they were quite popular and influential. Both Nirvana and Wu Tang are icons of a turning point in their genre.

"Turning point of hip-hop."

Which turning point was that? The one in the sewer right before it hit the main line?

If you stacked all your turds in the back yard, would they count as a "genre?"

You're a dipshit.

Just because you don't like hip-hop doesn't make it irrelevant, does it? I don't like classic rock, but I'd hardly call it irrelevant.

Jeff

Actually, it does.

All hip-hop proves is that if you market it properly, people will buy anything.

You're a music major.

That's the only thing more worthless than a dipshit.

actually..your opinion means nothing to anyone but yourself. People who are too stupid to realize Hip-Hop has many good musicians are usually "dipshits"

Too bad the real musicians lay down the tracks in the studio, and then some thug (sorry...arteest) comes in later to lay his profanity laden, poorly constructed rhyme down over the top.

Color Bob Dole impressed.

You're a dipshit.

Nirvana sucks too. The only good rock band in the last 15 years has been Goo Goo Dolls.

Actually tons of "thug rappers" make thier own beats. Try listening to something other than MTV. No, what am I saying, you're too busy trying to look like a hardass on a message board.

You're a gimmick

Bob Dole hasn't watched MTV since 1986.

Pounding on a trash can and calling it a beat only counts if your name is Lars.

You're a dipshit.

I don't really disagree that much of the rapping is piss poor. I like the grooves and beats of hip hop, myself. There is, though, a lot of really great hip hop that has funky, soulful grooves with cleverly written, non-profanity laden lyrics that are often not rapped, and done by musicians who play all their own instruments.

Seriously.
