Patriots Trade Laurence Maroney to Dungver

Compensation unknown. Very surprising. Per Adam Schefter.

Analysis of trade from Patriots perspective:

Meanwhile, the Patriots are counting on veterans Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk to make it through the season healthy – and the continued development of BenJarvus Green-Ellis -- as Maroney represented a talented insurance policy.

The Patriots receive a 2011 fourth-round choice from the Broncos, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. In addition to Maroney, the Patriots shipped a 2011 sixth-round pick to the Broncos, according to Schefter.

Maroney was entering the final year of his contract, so this is a sign that the Patriots didn’t expect him to be back in 2011.

Maroney, who was limited by a thigh injury of late, was inactive for the team’s season-opening win. Yet even upon his return to health, he might have remained inactive as the 34-year-old Taylor had wrestled the No. 1 spot on the depth chart away from him.

Also, Morris had leapfrogged Maroney because of his added value as a lead-blocking fullback, occasional ball-carrier, and contributor on special teams units.

With Faulk entrenched as the team’s third-down back, that left Maroney fighting for the No. 4 spot on the depth chart.

Because coaches often look for special teams value in that spot, Green-Ellis is a better fit than Maroney.

Given that set of dynamics, plus the chance to pick up a fourth-round draft choice, the Patriots saw enough value in the deal to pull the trigger.

Another dynamic here -- look for the Patriots to completely revamp their RB group after this year. All those old players need replacing, and Maroney won't be the guy, so look for them to spend some of those multiple draft picks they have on an RB or two, and possibly sign some FAs this upcoming offseason.

Good point by the ESPN blogger. The law firm is probably a more valuable player than Maroney at this juncture.

Maroney was a poor selection from Day One.

And there's no reason to spend a high draft choice on a running back these days, although teams continue to do so, often with very mixed results.

And one final note from Shanahan about Laurence Maroney. "I loved him," Shanahan said. "I think the Patriots got a steal. An absolute steal. I think he's going to be the best back in the league."

Quote:
"Oh, yeah, when I look at Maroney, and we looked at him a lot, we thought he had everything," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's got speed, elusiveness, power, that ability to make people miss. You didn't see a lot in pass protection (in college), but you saw plenty of toughness.

"When you look at running backs, there are very few that can separate themselves from the rest of the pack. We thought he had a chance to be one of those."
