What makes it complicated is that what happens in practice and what happens in reality are two entirely different things.
We've seen this game played before. You're assuming that if Thigpen lights it up next year, that he'll keep his job. We've seen in too many instances that first round QBs are often handed starting jobs they don't deserve. I'm all for this strategy on the contingency that the head coach will give Thigpen a fair chance to win and keep his starting job, and that he'll be quick to replace Thigpen the minute they realize he isn't the answer. While that sounds like a simple concept, it seems like a decision coaches struggle to make ESPECIALLY when you have a GM that puts pressure on the coach to play the expensive top 10 QB pick. |

Years ago, they were given an opportunity to sit and learn, but the money and pressure have changed that.

That's a great mentality. You should definitely write the book on a QB because you didn't like how he played for 3 or 4 starts. Thigpen deserves a full offseason to work with coaches, work with receivers, to work on his mechanics, and to work with a full playbook. Because he was third string, he has never had access to any of those until midseason 2008.
Yes, you bring in strong competition and I'd be fine with that being a first round pick. And yes, you yank him if the new QB clearly outperformns Thigpen. And yes, you yank Thigpen if he isn't playing to a very high level in 2009. But the stupidest strategy in the book would be to say that Thigpen doesn't win a job in 2008 no way, no how. Jobs shouldn't be guaranteed to players just because of their draft position. |

Ticky tacky convo going on in here.
I thought it was a GIVEN, that management would be more PATIENT with a 1st round QB over a 7th round PS player. Why the heck is there even a debate?

We just shouldn't play anyone we draft this year, our team is already young and everyone deserves more time to develop and its too early to give up on any of them.

Some of you act like it's wrong to develop MORE THAN ONE QB at a time. I'm astounded.

After Ryan calmed down a bit, he has played good in the first half. He threw a bomb to White, White droped the easy catch.

All I have to say is if these guys don't come out or we aren't in position to get a QB then we better take Taylor Mays cause a OT wouldn't be a good pick for this team and those DE's just don't do it for me.
