I somehow think the Illinois State - Alabama comparison isn't quite valid for Raiders - Broncos.

Oh, perhaps a little more applicable, but I wouldn't discount Chargers that quickly. Rivers makes them always dangerous.

Denver will still play the game hard. The players and coaches all still have careers. Where the Chiefs or Raiders are seeded in the playoffs probably means **** all to them

It's been a while since denver has played a game that meant nothing. No one can be sure of how they respond.

I would guess the Broncs will be angry and competitive. Shame on them, if not.

DEN - 16
OAK - 12

That is the only way I see denver winning, a low scoring ugly kind of game.

Potentially going 12-4, sweeping the division, and still getting stuck with a road Wild Card game is a bitter feeling. I've always hoped the NFL would give the team with the better record the home wild card game. No reason an 8-8 team from a terrible division deserves to play at home against a team that's 13-3 and lost their division to a 14-2 team. They can still keep everything else the same.

In the grand scheme I know it all evens out and there are games like the Chargers game and Falcons game we had no business winning yet did. That said, the Titans game in particular was just an absolute blown opportunity that was 75% Andy, 20% DAT, and 5% Alex.

Yeah, but if they did that then there may as well not be divisions. Maybe there's an argument to be made for that though. That is, get rid of the divisions and simply go by record alone. The top two teams get the bye, the next two teams with the best records get the home wildcard game, etc.

This Sunday, the Steelers don't have to worry about anything, win or lose. They can rest everyone and finish with a worse record than Miami. And Miami doesn't have anything to play for either. But without the current structure they'd both have to put out maximum effort because it would be the difference between a road playoff game and a home one.

The Texans, who have clinched, may also be in that mix under pure record system. And with the Phins fighting for a home spot, the Patriots would also have to fight too because if they lose and the Raiders win, the Raiders get the #1 seed (I think).

The regular season rivalries would be rendered meaningless though, so I guess how one feels about it would depend on how much they value the history between teams.

It's an interesting idea, but one that's not going to happen.

I have always failed to comprehend this logic. Why would the playoff seeding system render rivalries obsolete? The teams will still face each other home and away every year.

exactly. The only change that needs made is home games are based on record in the WC round. Sorry but if you win your division with only 8, 9 or even 10 wins, you shouldn't be gifted a home game. Shit, you shouldn't be gifted for anything winning a shitty division.
