Sunglasses buying philosophy

I'm getting old, and I love it, mostly.

Never been a sunglasses wearer, thus never been a sunglasses buyer.

Don't know where I'll land. I am sunglasses-agnostic.

Which are you? Why?

A good pair of shades costs the same as a Friday night bar tab and is a whole lot more useful.

Back in my youth (before bills) I was all about the $100 Oakleys. Now I hit the dollar store and generally lose them in about a week. The only exception is a pair of Ray bans I found at an airport parking lot in October. I've still got them and they're holding up well to date.

I broke down and spent $68 on a nice pair of polarized sunglasses at Sams last week. Anti-glare on both sides of the lens. They are very nice. Will use them for recreational wear and keep them off the jobsite though.

I ended up getting this pair of Oakley's, which are kick ass. As someone who has never had a nice pair of sunglasses, I definitely feel it was worth the money.

I'm not sure I have ever spent more than $5 on a pair of sunglasses. In fact, I am still wearing a $5 pair of sunglasses that I bought in Cancún 7 years ago.

Just bought a pair of titanium Revo Calibrates:

They were not cheap...at all. But I was trying different pairs on without looking at price tags first and these were just easily the most comfortable. And with the brown polarized lenses, things are incredibly sharp in them (much better than the black Oakley's or Ray Ban's that preceded them). It really makes a difference in contrasts when you have them on. Beyond that, the titanium frames make them a ton lighter and dammit I just liked 'em.

Don't cheap out on sunglasses. You only get one set of eyes and you don't want to F them up by being cheap.

This is my 3rd pair of the same BR sunglasses. Lost the first, lens fell out/were scratched for the second. But they look good and are polarized.. so whatever. I get them when they're on sale and usually get another 40% off so they're around $50-60 shipped.

I also have them in the gunmetal color, but like the brown/gold pair more.

This thread helped me realize a while back I need to buy a nice pair. I have light sensitive eyes so getting the UV protection really makes a huge difference, as does the polarization. That plus the fact that the lens quality on nice ones is so much better and makes everything look so much sharper and clearer than cheap ones. I do think the best lenses I tried on were the Maui Jims but they were really REALLY expensive and they didn't really have my style.

I got these Ray-Bans about a month ago and I love them. They even came with a 90 day no questions asked free replacement warranty as well as a year long manufacturers defect free replacement warranty.

Ok, for the crowd that spends good money on shades. Do you then have an el cheapo pair for real active things you do? Honest question. I wear shades all day, every day, when I'm outside. I'm very active and wear them fishing, hunting, golfing, swimming, canoeing, playing softball, playing flag football, running, gardening, working on the jeep, etc. How in the hell do you not break them? I'm very lucky if a pair lasts me 6 months, therefore I just buy two el cheapo pair every year. confused

Yeah, I still use my $10 pair for softball, but I use my nice ones for golf or most other outdoor things that aren't around water (tailgates, baseball games, mowing, etc...).

My expensive ones will go to the lake when I have some crokies for them, but I haven't gotten around to buying any.

I wear the same pair of Oakleys for doing all those things you listed. I did break an arm on my Oakleys once when I had a collision with a dipshit on the softball field. But I contacted Oakley and they sent me a replacement set of arms. Never broke a pair other than that. My current pair I've had for 4 years.

I've trashed, broken, or lost too many over the years to not have el cheapos. I am considering a pair of maui jims I like, but they will be strickly for driving, tailgating, and golfing.

Cool. I was just responding to your question. If you wear shades all day long (like we do here in AZ) seems like even more reason not to wear low-quality.
