Andy Reid shuts down your Chiefs QB controversy talk

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2016/1...ntroversy-talk

by Joel Thorman Oct 31, 2016, 2:44p

You know Andy Reid was going to stand by Alex Smith and that’s what he did on Monday when facing the press. Reid has been doing this for a loooong time so he let reporters have their fun for a few minutes and then he shut down any talk of Nick Foles playing in front of a healthy Alex Smith. Will it work? I guess it depends on how well Foles plays this weekend ... if he plays this weekend since the Chiefs doctors contend Alex actually doesn’t have a concussion.

Check out this exchange between Reid and reporters this afternoon.

Q: You were asked whether you had to cut back the game plan when Foles came in and you said no. Did he allow you to expand the game plan, maybe do some things that you couldn’t do with Smith?

Reid: No. Alex, I’m not sure we realize how good he is. We’ve opened this thing up further than maybe we’ve ever opened it up. He does a tremendous job. It’s a shame he didn’t have a chance to finish off the game plan because he would’ve had a ton of success with it. Not to take anything away from Nick. We didn’t have to cut a thing out for Nick coming in. That was a win-win for both guys. To think one would’ve done better than the other, I don’t believe that. If Alex would’ve been in, we would’ve done the same thing.

Q: You guys his four passes of 30 yards down the field. That’s unusual for you guys. Was that because the way the game was going or because of who was at quarterback?

Reid: I think it was part of the plan. That was all in the game plan. They would’ve been called. They were right on the first 15. They were coming up so whether it was Alex in there or Nick they were coming up. A couple of them formation wise, there was a little confusion on the formation and guys popped open.

Q: Does Foles give you more capability in that area?

Reid: No, I’m not even sure I like the way you’re going with this. Alex can do all the things that need to be done in this offense and do them at a Pro Bowl-caliber level.

Q: Is he your quarterback when he’s healthy then?

It's rather simply because of the irrational hate he receives. There are certainly easier, less contriversial, QBs to follow that wouldn't come with the side effects that come with simply wanting the guy to succeed in the face of his detractors.

Dilfer was good for 1.5 TDs per game the year the Bucs won the SB.

Not only has Alex never done that in a regular season, if you account for difference in eras due to passing rules, that would be like a QB throwing for 34 TDs today.

Dilfer > Alex

You mean the Ravens.

He arguably played behind the best defense ever assembled, and that offensive unit was underrated because of it. Solid running game with stout O-line play gave Dilfer opportunities to make plays. That team would dominate field position and control clock.

Never understand why people blame the athlete for getting picked high in the draft and then not living up to their expectations. Unless he got picked #1 and then phoned it in - not sure there's much to complain about. Did he collect his big paycheck and then refuse to put in the work? Did he perform well at the end of his time at SF, cost KC 2 seconds, sign a big contract extension and then throw on a bunch of weight and stop putting in time in the film room? No, he has actually performed better than his numbers at SF. You dont like his play, fine - hate on Dorsey and Reid for bringing him here but all he's done is be the best QB that he knows how to be and has been part of KCs recent success.

He has definately lived up to his end of the deal that he signed with Reid/Dorse/Hunt. Your hate is misplaced in my opinion. He's doing the job he was brought in to do and doing it at a high level.

I doubt Reid and Dorsey made being in the top third of NFL QBs part of their expectations. You keep thinking that your evaluation of the position has anything to do with how Reid evaluates the position. If it did, why would they have spent those precious 2nds to bring him over from SF in the first place - based on what you constantly hold up as paltry numbers by NFL standards?

If they thought that being in Reid's system would make him substantially better, why would they have given him the lucrative extension when after his first full year of play the numbers only were marginally better than his recent years in SF?

Why not use the current injury to flip to Foles now, if they are as discontented with his play as you believe is so obvious to everyone?

They don't see the position in the same way you do. Nor does the Gruden, or Harbaugh or Deon or the commentator from the last game or a ton of other people in and around the league - or me - who believe that he is a solid contributor to the Chiefs recent success. Again, I'm not trying to convince you that you should think he's a great QB, he will never be what you want him to be - and that's fine. I simply will never understand why it is so important to you, and others, that everyone should loathe him the way that you do.

You are truly delusional. Of course they expected him to be part of a decent passing attack. At the very least. Instead they got hot butt mud.

Quote:
If they thought they could make him substantially better, why would they have given him the extension after the first year when he didn't prove that he could do so?
Because Alex actually showed something that first season. He threw 27 TDs in 16 games with a lot of hot garbage around him. He was damn good in the playoffs.

He has since regressed substantially, is throwing 1 TD per game, can't even ****ing scramble anymore, and the passing game is complete and total garbage despite the fact they've added lots of talent around him.

The offense isn't scoring with him at QB. The only reason it scored a TD AT ALL vs one of the worst NFL defenses Sunday was the defense gifting him a short field.

Quote:
Why not flip to Foles now when the opportunity has presented itself?
Because, just like Pioli before them, they are entrenched and stuck with their $70 million dollar man.

They made their bed, Alex Smith is shitting in it, and now they're all going to have to lay in it.

Unless Smith gets his noggin cracked open, decides to retire and we get into an injury settlement situation. That would be the best for all parties.

But likely we're just going back to being stuck in neutral.

Good thing the defense is beasting or these guys would be getting ****ing FIRED.

If you're rolling with Alex the rest of the year, go get another stud WR at the deadline and another defensive player. Load up for a run and see what happens. I'd roll with Foles but that's because I'll take the big arm potential any day.

Thanks for the laugh.

You lose all credibility with that post. You are simply an Alex Smith hater. You are not even making any sense anymore.

No matter how much you post complaining about Alex, he is still going to start for the Chiefs. Deal with it. It's not the end of the world. We won a playoff game with the guy and would have won two with him if Charles didn't get hurt and our defense didn't completely fall apart against the Colts.

Even the worst Alex Smith hater should be able to admit he is not a bad QB.. Stop acting like he is Matt Cassel, he isn't

It makes complete sense. You just don't understand, apparently, that you have to multiply stats from 2000 to account for the difference in eras.

Throwing 1.5 TDs per game in 2000 (24 in a 16-game season) is like throwing 34 TDs today.

Even IF YOU DON'T, Alex Smith has NEVER thrown 1.5 TDs per game in ANY YEAR.

Quote:

He is a turnover-free version of Matt Cassel, and will lead us to the same place: purgatory.

I'd guess 'ol Alex will never win a division here. Shit, at least Cassel did THAT.

To explain it:

24 TDs (or 1.5 TDs/game) would have ranked 6th in the league in 2000

Last year, the 6th-ranked TD mark was 34.

MAKE SENSE, DUMBO?

Additionally, Trent Dilfer threw for 180 yards per start that year. Granted, that's only 2,880 yards, but that would have ranked 15th that season.

Last year the 15th ranked passer threw for 3900 yards.

Alex Smith will never throw for 3900 yards and 34 TD in a season.

Ergo, he will never be Trent Dilfer.

It's a schtick, an investment. He doesn't have an actual personality. But if he's known in Chief fan circles as the Alex hater, then people go 'oh yeah, Claynus the Alex hater. . . '

It keeps his noggin out of the tub of ice cream.
