Chiefs' offense: "one of the worst in the league, by nearly every measure"

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2013/9...chiefs-offense

some numbers to chew on from arrowhead pride

Quote:
The Chiefs are actually 12th in the league in PPG, at 23.7. But if you take away the 14 points the defense is directly responsible for, that number drops to 19 PPG, which would be tied for 23rd - with the Raiders. The Chiefs are relying on the defense to score points, which isn't good. Defensive scoring is random and shouldn't be part of the game plan. They didn't need Tamba Hali's pick-6 to beat the Jaguars, but they did need Eric Berry's against the Eagles.

They also are just not moving the ball; their 333 yds/gm is 21st in the league and their 4.9 yds/play ranks 25th. "Well Kyle," you may ask, " if the Chiefs offense is so bad, how are they undefeated this year?" That's an excellent question, thank you for asking. The answer is that the defense and special teams are much, much better than we thought.
Quote:
The problem the Chiefs are having is getting to the Red Zone in the first place. They're 30th in yards per drive, with only Tampa Bay and Jacksonville behind them, and Cleveland directly in front of them (not good company to be in). This is a really, really bad offense. But here's the real kicker: the Chiefs' offense has the best starting field position in the NFL this year, and still can't score.
Quote:
The Chiefs average 17 yards per drive better field position than their opponents (ok, ok, 16.95), the best mark in the NFL (2nd table). Only two other teams average more than 10 yards better starting field position than their opponents (New England and Chicago). The Chiefs' average starting line of scrimmage (LOS) is their own 36.97 yard line (best in the NFL), while their opponents average starting LOS is their own 20.02 yard line (also best in the NFL). What all of that means is the Chiefs's offense is handed consistently great starting field position and can't do anything with it, then they let the special teams pin opponents deep in their own territory. The defense bails out the offense by not letting opponents move the ball, giving the offense the ball back with great starting field position. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There's a nice breakdown of our defense against philly over there as well:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/9/2...p-kelly-eagles

Quote:
I have to reiterate and emphasize just how much the Chiefs played man to man -- like a ton of it. And they have the secondary to handle it, unlike most teams in the NFL. Specifically, they matched up Sean Smith on Cooper a lot on the outside. If this had been a prize fight, Cooper's corner would have thrown in the towel somewhere around the middle of the second quarter. Smith owned him right up until the end of the game when he started cramping up. Cooper just couldn't shake him, especially on those aforementioned deep routes Kelly had him running all game.

I do have to laugh at the notion that people assume that this is a battle for respectability.

I know this for sure. John Dorsey didn't come here for that. I know that up until the past two seasons, the Eagles weren't satisfied with just being in the playoffs. I don't think there is a soul here who would bitch moan and complain if the Chiefs were in the AFCCG 5 years straight.

I don't see that at all. None of their moves this year said to me, YUP, LETS GET BACK TO 8-8.

Doesn't matter. Anyone who is posting from DarthCarlSatan/OTWP/Milkman's side will consider any game that does not feature a 1st round QB drafted by KC on the roster as a net failure. I'm not saying they're right or wrong, but you will never convince them otherwise.

I think that's a massive generalization.

It's a battle for respectability this year, which after last season is fine. But, it's not like Pioli or Haley or any coaches/players didn't want more when they go here, either. Clark's shown he's willing to come in every few years, cleanup and make a splash with hirings, which certainly helps bring back fans.

You might ask what else he can do, but if half the stuff that's been reported is true about what Pioli was doing behind the scenes, Hunt would have stepped in immediately and put a stop to that shit. And there's no better example of what a passionately involved owner can do than looking at what Sporting has done since Hunt sold them.

Ever since Cassel was signed in 2009 the narrative has always been that a team's best (amd dare I say only) shot at winning *multiple* championships is by drafting and developing a QB in the 1st round. And this prototypical drafted QB must be the gunslinging type that is expected to complete passes with a yardage above that of the league average on a consistent basis. Any other permutation involving QB type and means of acquisition has been determined to be a rehashing the Carl and Pioli eras.

Sorry for including you with a moron like DarthCarlSatan but by all means tell me that this isn't the metric in which the team is measured now.

The best shot for any team to be competitive deep into the playoffs is to develop a franchise QB who is capable of putting up a lot of points in the playoffs, as opposed to a game manager or winning with defense. That's how the game is played these days, and that much should be pretty obvious. Of course it's not the only way, and if you have a good enough defense, you can win with a good game manager.

The Packers have drafted more QBs in the first 3 rounds than any other team in the past 20 years and have only needed two of them. The Chiefs have drafted one in that time (in the 3rd round) and have won 3 playoff games in 40 years.

It's not a black and white argument and at the end of the post season I doubt anyone cares about anything except for the wins... but, there's overwhelming evidence to suggest that the retread game manager strategy doesn't work.

The metric is performance. It's really that simple. If this offense clicks into gear (which they should), and if, in the next few years, they're able to consistently go deep in the playoffs with Alex Smith behind center, then he's fine, and the trade was fine, regardless of who they coulda/shoulda/woulda had. Hell, he'll be the most popular guy in KC. Look how much everyone loves Trent Green, and he never even won a playoff game (through no real fault of his own)....

People are understandably concerned that we're seeing a familiar script play out. There are other ways to go about it, concerning the quarterback position. But in the end what ultimately matters is performance.

I believe the best way to find your franchise QB is in the first round of the draft, but I never maintained that it is the only way.

I believe the best way to sustain success for a long period of time is to find a young QB just approaching his prime if you feel there is someone worth trading for or signing in free agency, as a 29-30 year old only has 4 or 5 years of prime remaining, and only 3 Qbs over the age of 33 have won SBs.

OK, here's the deal Mr. QB man. We Chiefs fans are wounded animals. So we're just gonna go ahead and hate you with all our heart for a while. But it's OK, because if you do everything right we might realize a few years from now that we should've supported you all along. Don't worry about anything short of perfection, for that way there be bitches, . . . and you're not a bitch are you Mr. QB man? I mean, right now, in my mind, you are a worthless bitch, but I'm giving you a chance to change my mind some day.

You're welcome.
