Chiefs' offense: "one of the worst in the league, by nearly every measure"

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2013/9...chiefs-offense

some numbers to chew on from arrowhead pride

Quote:
The Chiefs are actually 12th in the league in PPG, at 23.7. But if you take away the 14 points the defense is directly responsible for, that number drops to 19 PPG, which would be tied for 23rd - with the Raiders. The Chiefs are relying on the defense to score points, which isn't good. Defensive scoring is random and shouldn't be part of the game plan. They didn't need Tamba Hali's pick-6 to beat the Jaguars, but they did need Eric Berry's against the Eagles.

They also are just not moving the ball; their 333 yds/gm is 21st in the league and their 4.9 yds/play ranks 25th. "Well Kyle," you may ask, " if the Chiefs offense is so bad, how are they undefeated this year?" That's an excellent question, thank you for asking. The answer is that the defense and special teams are much, much better than we thought.
Quote:
The problem the Chiefs are having is getting to the Red Zone in the first place. They're 30th in yards per drive, with only Tampa Bay and Jacksonville behind them, and Cleveland directly in front of them (not good company to be in). This is a really, really bad offense. But here's the real kicker: the Chiefs' offense has the best starting field position in the NFL this year, and still can't score.
Quote:
The Chiefs average 17 yards per drive better field position than their opponents (ok, ok, 16.95), the best mark in the NFL (2nd table). Only two other teams average more than 10 yards better starting field position than their opponents (New England and Chicago). The Chiefs' average starting line of scrimmage (LOS) is their own 36.97 yard line (best in the NFL), while their opponents average starting LOS is their own 20.02 yard line (also best in the NFL). What all of that means is the Chiefs's offense is handed consistently great starting field position and can't do anything with it, then they let the special teams pin opponents deep in their own territory. The defense bails out the offense by not letting opponents move the ball, giving the offense the ball back with great starting field position. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There's a nice breakdown of our defense against philly over there as well:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/9/2...p-kelly-eagles

Quote:
I have to reiterate and emphasize just how much the Chiefs played man to man -- like a ton of it. And they have the secondary to handle it, unlike most teams in the NFL. Specifically, they matched up Sean Smith on Cooper a lot on the outside. If this had been a prize fight, Cooper's corner would have thrown in the towel somewhere around the middle of the second quarter. Smith owned him right up until the end of the game when he started cramping up. Cooper just couldn't shake him, especially on those aforementioned deep routes Kelly had him running all game.

Our defense forces about 3 turnovers a game.

This game we ****ed up and turned the ball over within two plays of getting it back.

This defense did not budge. Was not bothered. Came out and played like it was their understanding this was their job.

They know this team will win being a very Ravens-esque team or it won't win at all...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The offense is improving and will continue to improve.

Anyone that thought that the Chiefs offense would put up 30 points a game to start the season ignored the fact that there are four new (and young) offensive lineman, a new #2, no established slot and nothing beyond Fasano at TE.

The offense will continue to improve throughout the season, which is all anyone can ask four games into the season.

Outside of McGrath, everyone has played as expected, although calling Fisher a disappointment is an understatement.

That's how we're winning games. Jaworski and all the other tards on ESPN need to die in a fire whenever they talk about the Chiefs and taking care of the football. That's the standard line, and it's code for, "This team is still shitty, but they're winning lots of games and we're not going to bother analyzing why they are."
It does get used as a cliche too often probably... but winning the turnover battle is extremely important. Teams that play wreckless Martzball and don't care about turnovers almost never succeed. That's why Vermeil used to preach it over and over... you can probably print off pages and pages of statistical evidence showing turnover differential makes a difference.

Charles should've caught that one, even though it was high and behind him. That was just a freak turnover...sometimes the ball bounces your way, sometimes it doesn't. This time it didn't. Could've sworn the same exact thing happened last season w/ McCluster not catching the pass against TB.

Bowe's on the other hand, shouldn't have ever been thrown. If you don't take shots down field everyone is gonna play up in your face and that's what happened on that pick. Defender just stepped in front of it, he knew it was coming. So did I watching the TV.

This is going to be a similar year to 2010. Except the QB is marginally better and our defense is much better. Other than Houston, our next 4-5 games are very winnable games. If we beat Houston, we have a good chance of being undefeated heading into what may possibly be the biggest matchup in a long time at Arrowhead when (the better) Manning and the Broncos come into town. I will sure as shit be at that game.

There is nothing ravenseque about this defense.

First, the ravens demolished the run game. The Chiefs are slightly susceptible to that right now. Second, that ravens offense. Was Jamal Lewis, and nothing else.

This offense is just a work in progress, but they proved today they are getting better.

Stop it.

This is a complete football team.

Can you imagine how this offense will be in December when we the following happens?

1. All of our TE's are healthy.
2. Our OL has had time to gel.
3. Fisher gets the hang of the NFL.
4. Our offense gains confidence and has a better understanding of the scheme.

I can't wait to see what this offense looks like in the coming months.

No one is going to want to see the Chiefs in the playoffs.

I unlike most, scoff at the idea that this is a regular season team that chokes in the playoffs.

This team has so much swag.......

There does seem to be a clutch big plays at important time factor to this team on both sides of the ball that we have not had in I don't know how long.

That pass to Bowe is exactly the kind of pass that Alex Smith needs to make, and Bowe needs to go after that ball.

Here is the major issue with this post....we are currently a carbon copy of the 2011 49ers when it comes to how we win. The only difference is we pass a little more and run a little less. Im willing to bet all these numbers posted in the OP that make us 'so horrible on offense', the 2011 9ers were likely very similar in those stats. They were 13-3 and should have made it to the SB btw if anyone forgot. They won alot of games that year in the 24-10 range. Its the same brand of football and its working. WORKING IN SEPTEMBER.
