Why not ObamaCare?

Now, I've been meaning to ask a couple questions for a few days now, especially since the government shutdown.

To me, the whole government shutdown thing seems like the most childish shit on the part of the Republicans. It really seems like it's a "If I can't have what I want, neither can you" situation, like the Republicans care more about their own agenda than what is in the best interest of the people of the US.

The main question I have though, is, what is so bad about ObamaCare? Now, admittedly, I don't know the ins and outs of ObamaCare, but is it not just health-care? If it is, I seriously do not understand what the problem is. It works for so many countries in which healthcare is already in place.

If ObamaCare is not simply just health-care then please educate me as to what the main differences are, and why it is such a "problem".

Thanks

I can only speak for myself I'll give you two reasons:

1. IF it's a TAX, then make it a TAX. I have to jump through 1000 hoops to get insured by by a private company THROUGH the goddamn government. It's obscenely inefficient, and that's going to hurt the bottom line, which is the COST of medical care. That gets passed on. Thank god I don't have to deal with this shit... yet.

2. Speaking of COSTS... yeah. Those aren't really addressed in Pharmacare. It's corporate welfare and I don't support that bullshit. All it's doing to me is jacking up the rates of the healthcare I'm getting at my job. My insurance is awesome... but maybe not for long because our premiums jumped 40% in 2013. That's about 10 grand MORE per quarter for our company and 40K out of our pocket yearly to cover our employees, which we didn't need a government mandate to do. That's, you know... significant.

I'm a big supporter of health care reform... just not stupid health care reform. IF it doesn't address the out of control rise of costs, it's bullshit.

It's a whole different ball of wax if you don't live here and feel the pain. looking in from the outside is pretty painless.

Interesting. How do you come by this conclusion?

It is absolutely ridiculous that Obama pursued something this far-reaching and took the unbelievably arrogant position that the public sector could do this more efficiently, as opposed to just enabling the private sector to come to this kind of a solution.
I agree that there are good things. I agree with the move to electronic records and I agree that making sure that everyone participates in the system (via something like an individual mandate) are both positives. A third thing that I think is generally positive is the separation of health care from employment, but I don't particularly care for how it's done in Obamacare.

I don't agree that individual mandates reduce premiums significantly in any particularly useful sense though. It certainly doesn't reduce the premium for a healthy person who is forced for the first time to carry insurance. It reduces the premiums for people who already carry insurance by spreading the cost across the entire population instead of just across the population of people who voluntarily insure themselves. But that's just a temporary respite for those people. Overall premiums won't go down (and might go up to account for increased use of healthcare services by people who went without before) and the rate of increase of overall premiums will continue at a much faster pace than general inflation because nothing has been done to contain them.
