What part of government is shut down

They keep saying government is shut down. Other than some bullshit moves to piss people off what is actually shut down? Parks? A few offices in rural america? What else?

Background checks are typically done through the state.

Is anyone here, left or right, starting to understand how our Federal Government just straight up robs us?

Seriously...Take Cally for example...the feds take 10 percent of every dollar all the people that pay taxes earns in the state per year. Not everybody pays. And for what? Its so bloated.

I think this is a tremendous opportunity for the States to take back a number of reponsibilities.

I guess I am not the only one who was not paying attention during the previous shutdowns. If not the groupies would be jumping to dismiss this notion or the anti Barry crowd jumping in to confirm it~

background checks are done online 24/7 Atf is agency not state You fill out silly form. Answer amazing questions. Dealer can enter info on smartphone and approval if you are not a felon or something is done in minutes

Re the rip off ...no doubt. If a shutdown was real no one would notice if 20% of the govies never showed up again.

This how this basically works in a typical context of a state. They contract inspection. The inspectors then tell them that it needs repair. The State has to pick and choose which repairs to fund.

In this country we spend less than 1/2 of a percent of the GDP on infrastructure compared to China that spends 8 percent. They're growing and bigger, but we should raise our commitment to it.

There were differences that make this one more comprehensive than the last:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...tdown/2888419/

12. Would this shutdown be different from those in the 1990s? Yes. When the 1995 shutdown started, Congress had already passed three of 13 appropriations bills. (They funded military construction, agriculture, and energy and water projects.) Also, more government services are automated.

Some of the pre-1995 “shutdowns” were not only on weekends but actually involved only a few departments of the government, as Congress had already completed appropriations legislation for most of the government before the impasse over spending was reached. In 1995, Congress had completed 5 of the 13 appropriations bills before the November 14 shutdown occurred. President Bill Clinton had signed four of those bills—Agriculture, Energy and Water, Transportation, and Military Construction. He vetoed a fifth, the Legislative Branch bill, signaling to Congress that he would not fund its staff until it funded the White House, which was contained in the Treasury-Post Office bill. As a result, the first shutdown in 1995 involved only 12 of the 15 departments of the federal government.

Don't worry, you'll have more to deal with. On the Govt. side we've gone through the requirement to "make a list" of who we'll furlough every year for the last 5-6 years. With the house in the hands to the republicans and the senate under the control of the democrats, I think this will be an annual event for many years to come. And each year we're given a number to cut at which point in the political wrangling. You'd think it'd be the same each time, but no, there's always some new clown thrown in the middle that changes it up. In the end it doesn't really matter, I just plan for it now and don't get too worked up over it. It's just sad that it keeps us busy not doing what we were hired to do. But I get paid the same either way, this time I'll add "eventually" that that, so it's all good. And heck it's offered some interesting opportunities too, so it's not all bad.

I've heard that stores on military bases have been shut down. Wal Mart is giving everyone that would normally be able to shop there what amounts to free membership at Sam's Club for the duration of the shutdown. Suck it, haters.

Too bad for those living high off the hog in DC. They've been riding on this depression with out any pain.

VFW joins lawsuit over death benefits
By Patrick Dickson

Published: June 26, 2013

Looks like the Veterans of Foreign Wars is throwing its support to plaintiffs in a class action suit against Prudential Life Insurance, who they claim is wrongfully withholding death benefits.

According to the VFW, the 2010 suit alleges that Prudential failed to pay death benefits in a manner required by federal law, and instead profited from money belonging to the families of deceased service members and veterans.

In a blog posting by a lawyer named Jeffrey Mehalic, you get a pretty good explanation, with some cogent back-and-forth from the commenters.

Is the insurance company offering better terms than banks, and wisely counseling restraint in decision-making at a tough time, or are they simply withholding funds to earn interest for their own firm?

Maybe they could unseal the documents and show us.
