Seattle toying with a $15/hr minimum wage...

This is absolutely ridiculous. I kind of hope they do it and wreck their economy, except for the pain and devastation it would cause to the poor in that area. These morons don't understand anything about economics...

Depends on the business and the profit margin, right?

Anyway, I do support Seattle's ability to do this. If they kill themselves (because businesses close/leave, etc.) then they can reverse course. It's actually an advantage to the U.S., that different states/localities can tinker with this stuff, and other parts of the country can watch and learn, for good or for bad.

The other fact that many here ignore is that the national minimum wage may not make sense in all areas, depending on cost of living and other factors. Whatever that amount is now (I have no idea) may be ok in Iowa, but completely absurd in a San Francisco or New York. I wouldn't think Seattle would fall into that type of category, but who am I to judge?

Side note that increasing concentration of wealth at the very top of the economic spectrum is a growing problem in the U.S. Many here do not view it as a problem at all, which I understand, but seriously disagree with.

Whether this is a partial solution or not, I don't know, but I do know (or at least firmly believe) that states should feel free to take steps they feel are appropriate to moderate this problem.

There you go.

So when the minimum wage goes up, what effect does it have on prices at Starbucks and McDonald's and all the other places that employ workers at/near min. wage? And what effect does that have on consumers? I suspect that in those areas, it won't have a significant effect. People going to Starbucks and getting a half-caf, extra light, triple mocha, vendi, blah, blah blah aren't going to care whether it costs $4.25 or $4.62, I suspect.

Anyway -- experiment away and the rest of the country can watch and learn.

Surprised it's not Cambridge doing this, but you can bet they're paying attention...

How's this instead:

Are people in expensive markets ordering stupidly expensive cups of coffee really going to care if it goes from $4.25 to $4.62 a cup? Nah!

All kidding aside a buddy talked me into going to a Starbucks when we were in Atlanta. He ordered some milk shake thing and I ordered regular coffee black. They might make good milk shakes but their regular coffee sucks

Communism is ok around here as long as it doesn't effect poor corporate America. Record profits is no reason to increase living standards for Americans already stretching their paychecks to put food on the table. It's ok for parents to get a handout as long as the welfare office isn't involved.
