McDonald's helps workers get food stamps.

McDonald's helps workers get food stamps

Quote:
Nancy Salgado, who has worked at a Chicago McDonald's for 10 years and makes $8.25 an hour, asked the McResource representative a number of questions related to getting assistance to pay for her heating bill, her groceries and her sister's medical expenses. Salgado told the representative that she was recording the call for her sister.

The helpline operator never asked Salgado how much she made per hour, and how many hours per week she worked beyond the fact that she was a full-time employee. But she said that Salgado "definitely should be able to qualify for both food stamps and heating assistance."

The representative then pointed her toward a number of resources in Chicago, such as food pantries and a program that would help cover some of her heating bill. She said she would email her specific phone numbers and programs.

The operator also explained that the McResource line is available to help McDonald's workers who need help navigating the process of getting public assistance. The helpline's phone number is posted in fliers at many McDonald's locations.
Nice of McDonalds to help get its employees on the gov't teet.

Making minimum wage at a fast food place after ten years is a choice. A choice made by Nancy Selgado. The company should not be forced to compensate her beyond her worth. That's ridiculous.

I don't find it necessary to bag on this lady given the fact she's shown up for work 10 years and is apparently good enough to keep her job. I'd rather save ire for those who refuse to work or who commit crimes.

It was my job to do just that for several years. I was a fast food manager for most of my 20's. It's also incredibly easy to move up in fast food. You either have the ability or you don't. For the vast majority, the ability is there but the will holds them back. Those without the ability will need social programs to avoid poverty regardless of employer.

It's not bagging on her. If you are making minimum wage in a fast food place after ten years it's your own fault.

That's a different situation, working for tips. You get immediately rewarded for your effort. I mean that in fast food you will get plenty of hours and rise to a higher position if you are worthy of it. If it doesn't happen within ten years you either aren't doing something right or you're working for the wrong place.

Without reading the posts I am curious. Seems the problem with people on welfare is that they are moochers who live on it. In this case it is a woman who worked there for 10 years and can't make it.

You can make all the excuses in the world: she didn't educate herself for a higher paying job, they are cheap etc. But it comes down to the fact that minimum wage (which she is above) isn't cutting it. The fact remains that she isn't getting a chance to make a living.

I'll be honest and say if there needs to be some government intervention, it shouldn't be in the form of raising minimum wage. It should be a percentage increase in years worked. Furthermore, if the wage increases by the employer the lower the amount of government assistance she is eligible for.

I the think the point is that she has that chance and isn't taking advantage of it.

Not sure if I'm right here but if she had taken "that chance" and was promoted to manager or whatnot, wouldn't that have prevented Jane Doe from getting that position and she'd be the one instead on food stamps? Seems there's only so many seats when the music stops.

Yeah, and then Jane Doe starts the process. A person with no education or skill or work history can get an entry level job in fast food for minimum wage. Ideally that person is in that position because they are very young and they've made some choices along the way that led them there. From that point they can put in the effort to rise in the company, leave for a better job or just do enough to stay employed. We have the welfare system in place to help them out regardless of what choices they made.

She works at McDonalds. That is a job for highschool kids, not a job to raise a family and pay all the bills in a household. We are not a socialist country (yet) so having any form of government intervention is completely out of the question. And on avg a person the owns 1 McDonalds franchise takes home around 100k a year. They are not greedy millionaire owners treating there workers like crap. This country is going down the crapper at an alarming rate...

This is part of what I mean when I say that the biggest political divide in our country is not Republican versus Democrat or conservative versus liberal/progressive, it's libertarian versus authoritarian. I see the call for a higher minimum wage as authoritarian. Someone is in a spot where they don't earn as much money as you might think a "successful" person should earn. The libertarian response would be to encourage them to build a better life and grow. The authoritarian response is to forcefully change the situation so that they don't have to.

I don't see why the fast food workers are demonized so much while people ignore the hidden subsidies that businesses like WalMart and McDonalds receive by having the US's safety net as a "fringe benefit".

Not everyone has the talent nor desire to be management. People that are content with those jobs shouldn't live high on the hog, but they should earn enough to not require welfare programs to survive (granted they are full time workers).

Then start a business and pay your workers more.
