McDonald's helps workers get food stamps.

McDonald's helps workers get food stamps

Quote:
Nancy Salgado, who has worked at a Chicago McDonald's for 10 years and makes $8.25 an hour, asked the McResource representative a number of questions related to getting assistance to pay for her heating bill, her groceries and her sister's medical expenses. Salgado told the representative that she was recording the call for her sister.

The helpline operator never asked Salgado how much she made per hour, and how many hours per week she worked beyond the fact that she was a full-time employee. But she said that Salgado "definitely should be able to qualify for both food stamps and heating assistance."

The representative then pointed her toward a number of resources in Chicago, such as food pantries and a program that would help cover some of her heating bill. She said she would email her specific phone numbers and programs.

The operator also explained that the McResource line is available to help McDonald's workers who need help navigating the process of getting public assistance. The helpline's phone number is posted in fliers at many McDonald's locations.
Nice of McDonalds to help get its employees on the gov't teet.

I mean there are obviously idiots. There are also decent people that get caught with some pot or something dumb and get forced into it and are productive.

But yet I can have Mexicans making a good hourly wage and have to stop them from selling drugs out the back door.

The subsidies that McDonalds and WalMart receive are nothing more than wealth distribution from tax payers to the shareholders and franchisees of these companies.

For all the teeth gnashing that goes on in DC about wealth redistribution (real or not), I fail to see why people don't recognize this as a very real situation of wealth redistribution from tax payers to the shareholders of these companies.

It's bullshit for someone to say they are against wealth redistribution and then champion situations like this.

Nobody should take a fastfood job expecting to pay for healthcare, rent/mortgage, cable TV, electric, cellphone and blah blah blah. It just does not make sense. Good for her for working, really, but when you take one of the lowest jobs in America don't act surprised when you can't afford anything. Furthermore don't expect the way the economy works to change to fit your lazy lifestyle. Working at McDonalds is a very lazy life choice for an adult.

Please point out where I said those people should earn enough to afford a middle class lifestyle.

Can you list these subsidies, to promote clarity in this discussion? It would be more productive if we had some clear points of reference.

Do you disagree that paying your full time employees so little that they qualify for welfare programs is a subsidy?

Don't get hung up on semantics. Just because the government isn't calling it a subsidy doesn't change the fact that companies like that are able to pay their workers that wage because they know they can rely on welfare to survive.

No. That's not a subsidy.

McDonald's has recently reported quarterly and annual effective tax rates in the neighborhood of 28%-30%.

Since they are paying around double the average effective tax rate for individuals, why could McDonald's not make the same argument? They are not only compensating through wages and benefits, but they are paying the cost to support social welfare programs that a few emoloyees take advantage of as well.

Because McDonalds is not a living entity. It doesn't make arguments.

I don't know. Compared to a lot of manual labor stuff, fine.

Most companies insurance is unaffordable these days, they just offer it to say they do.

And there are tons of people given great chances that are just as dumb buying two new cars and crap like that when they can't afford it and all kinds of crap.

It's not semantics. It's reality. We live in a society. There is going to be a certain amount of "socialism" going on. It's not evil or wrong, it's simply part of living in a large group. By do that do you mean keep their pay structure? Yes.

No, it is semantics. Let's demonize the full time workers that rely on welfare to survive while working full time and ignore the real issue of the wealth redistribution from tax payers to McD's and WalMart BCUZ 'MURICA.

I think it's hilarious that you think they would keep their pay structure if we didn't have food stamps, medicaid, etc for their workers especially considering that McDonalds has different pay structures in the different countries that it operates in.

Let me do a little math here. The current minimum wage for California is $8 an hour (although it is going up soon). Say you work 80 hours a check. That's $640. How much would you estimate that this person gets to take home?

About $560 for a total of $1120 a month.
