McDonald's helps workers get food stamps.

McDonald's helps workers get food stamps

Quote:
Nancy Salgado, who has worked at a Chicago McDonald's for 10 years and makes $8.25 an hour, asked the McResource representative a number of questions related to getting assistance to pay for her heating bill, her groceries and her sister's medical expenses. Salgado told the representative that she was recording the call for her sister.

The helpline operator never asked Salgado how much she made per hour, and how many hours per week she worked beyond the fact that she was a full-time employee. But she said that Salgado "definitely should be able to qualify for both food stamps and heating assistance."

The representative then pointed her toward a number of resources in Chicago, such as food pantries and a program that would help cover some of her heating bill. She said she would email her specific phone numbers and programs.

The operator also explained that the McResource line is available to help McDonald's workers who need help navigating the process of getting public assistance. The helpline's phone number is posted in fliers at many McDonald's locations.
Nice of McDonalds to help get its employees on the gov't teet.

Unless you want to make an argument for raising the bar for qualifying for food stamps? Which is fine; but don't do so under the guise of this is somehow a terrible thing for McDonald's to be doing...you should just debate the food stamp program on its own merits.
Well, McD's should just tell there employees, "would you like an obamaphone with that".

From my experience I don't categorize it as "lazy." It goes deeper than that. Sure, there are lazy people. But I would categorize it as a form of depression and a lack of knowledge or ability.

As a side note: While I worked in fast food I helped hundreds of people improve their lives. Either by rising within the company or moving on to better things. I did it because I saw it as the right thing to do. For me, for my people and for the company. My employees were intensely loyal to me as a result and my numbers were outstanding. I was being pressured to take a promotion that would have taken over my life eventually (as I saw it) and I left the job when we started spitting out more kids. I now have a comfortable job making decent money and a couple of decades of family time to show for it. Life is good.

To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and to refute it, without ever having actually refuted the original position

Yup, that would be a strawman, since no one is actually making that argument.

You're wrong. I already gave an example earlier in this thread that obviously refutes it.

You choose the number schoolboy. You keep campaigning for companies to pay wages that afford a comfortable living to people who perfom mindless tasks. You put the responsibility on the company instead of the person. Why in the world should a company have to provide that type of wage to a person who can be replaced by the next person that goes through the drive through at McDonald's?

Sure. The math is wrong.

America, where we want our citizens to work 60 hours a week between two jobs to just afford the necessities, with help from the government because companies providing their workers with a good pay is wrong.
