Deal reached on Iranian nuclear program

DEVELOPING: A deal between six world powers and Iran has been struck, Fox News confirms.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said, `'Yes, we have a deal," as he walked past reporters crowding the hotel lobby where marathon negotiations had taken place over the past five days.

Asked if there was a deal, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said `'Yes" and gave a thumbs up sign.

The goal had been to hammer out an agreement to freeze Iran's nuclear program for six months, while offering the Iranians limited relief from crippling economic sanctions. If the interim deal holds, the parties will negotiate final-stage agreements to ensure Iran does not build nuclear weapons.

The deal came after the personal intervention by Secretary of State John Kerry and other foreign ministers whose presence had raised hopes for a breakthrough.

Diplomats refused to spell out details of the talks, which dragged on past midnight and into early Sunday.

No.

Newer is without question allowed.

Better is arguably disallowed depending on what you mean by it, but that's not clear at all. A functioning centrifuge replacing a broken centrifuge is clearly better. More importantly, "same type" doesn't necessarily preclude installing centrifuges that have improved features.

Don't get me wrong, Pat. I don't trust the Iranians at all on this. Inspection and verification is key. I think they'll try to re-neg on this deal, though, as they have before.
I not only don't trust the Iranians, but I don't trust the Obama administration. The Bush administration and the Clinton administration struck deals with North Korea that lead to a new member of the nuclear club.

Here, we have a paper deal that relies on verification that we can't be confident about while relaxing the only non-military lever we have (sanctions). Sounds like Korea (and Syria where we accepted words in return for taking all pressure off of Asad) all over again to me.

No proof of the bold, since there's been no way to verify. Just allegations.

Did you get that from your impeccable sources? Because it's false We caught them red-handed trying to import a nuclear weapons capability from AQ Khan's operation in Pakistan. They've failed to meet compliance requirements under the NNPT several times.

"We"...who's "we"? Our govt? How would they know? They're not the inspectors in charge. I think that claim comes from Bonkers Bolton--a known liar and repeated lawbreaker.
As for the document for converting uranium fluoride to uranium metal, Iran had claimed that the A.Q. Khan network gave the document to Iran, without Iran asking for it. In its May 2008 report, the IAEA confirmed Iran's contention by reporting that the government of Pakistan had confirmed the existence of an identical document there. http://www.antiwar.com/orig/sahimi.php?articleid=13104

Is Iran violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)?
The answer isn't black and white. It depends on whom you ask – and how deftly you define “violation”...

Even in censure, IAEA doesn't say Iran 'violated' NPT...

The two-page document does not use the word “violate.” Neither does that word appear in the 10 pages of the IAEA’s latest quarterly report on Iran from February...

[Hillary Clinton ] on Sunday stated flatly that Iran had “violated the terms of the NPT” and “been held under all kinds of restrictions and obligations that they have not complied with.”

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middl...y/%28page%29/2
Like I said no clear evidence of such. Same verbal sleight of hand that was used on Iraq by the same people who got us into Iraq. I realize, that is from 2010 but patteeu, you implied we had caught them in the past. Besides, the same pattern of half-truths is going on as before from PGWI, Bosnia, Iraq and now.

Iran should enrich to 60% to fuel ships if nuclear talks fail, MPs propose

http://www.tehrantimes.com/component...article/113064

A group of Iranian MPs has prepared a draft bill that would oblige the government to enrich uranium up to a purity of 60 percent if negotiations with the major powers over Tehran’s nuclear program fail, a report says.

According to the Fars News Agency, around 100 MPs signed the draft bill and presented it to the Majlis Presiding Board on Wednesday. However, MP Hossein Farhangi told the IRNA news agency that the Majlis Presiding Board has not received such a draft.

After intensive talks in Geneva, the foreign ministers of Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) struck an interim deal on November 24, based on which Iran agreed not to expand its nuclear program and to suspend its 20 percent uranium enrichment in return for a limited easing of the sanctions imposed on the country.

According to the agreement, over the course of six months, Iran and the six countries of the 5+1 group will draw up a comprehensive nuclear deal which will lead to a lifting of the sanctions on Iran and Iran will provide the world verifiable guarantees that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.

MP Mehdi Moussavinejad, a senior member of the Iranian parliament’s Energy Committee, said earlier that Iran would increase its uranium enrichment to 60 percent if the West violates the terms of the interim deal.

“Given the method that the other negotiating side -- the U.S. in particular -- has adopted during the nuclear negotiations, the legislators are working on a bill that will require the government to increase the level of uranium [enrichment] to over 60 percent,” Moussavinejad told IRNA.

Moussavinejad said that the level of enrichment is needed “to supply fuel for our ships.”

The draft bill was crafted after a group of U.S. senators prepared a new bill that includes “prospective sanctions” that expand economic and financial restrictions on Iran’s energy and banking sectors.

MP Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, the spokesman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told IRNA on Wednesday that the draft bill obliging the government to enrich uranium to a purity of 60 percent to fuel submarines and ships was crafted in order to give the Iranian nuclear negotiating team the upper hand.

“The plan of obliging the government to 60 percent enrichment is being drawn up to support the government and the negotiating team,” Naqavi Hosseini said.

If the U.S. Congress has prepared plans to put more “pressure on us, our Majlis should also do that,” he added.

Some of the same people who distrust the American government with telephone metadata under a strict, bipartisan, tri-branch oversight-laden process are the people who trust the Iranian mullahs when they say they aren't pursuing a nuclear bomb. Weird.
