I recognize that my ranking WKRP as highly as I do is not going to be a popular stance round these parts, but I can live with that. The show was also one of the first to appeal to young people, with its focus on (and use of) rock music of the time. It was socially conscious, tackling issues that others still didn't decades later - gay stigma, for example, and Vietnam veterans, growing old, finding God, drunk driving, race relations, parental expectations, sexual harassment, drugs, and the importance of an education, without being preachy. It broke ground by incorporating real events into the show, like the stampede at the Who concert. Its characters were memorable and iconic and people still quote the show more often than most, and people still know what kind of person you're talking about when you say Dr. Johnny Fever, Les Nessman, Herb Tarlek, or Venus Flytrap - but at the same time, those same characters had depth and complexity. It drew its humor from the characters, and it was never mean or gross or lowest-common-denominator. And it had the two most enthralling women since Gilligan's Island. Oh, and it was hilarious.

Show me another show that had all of that. I'll spot you M*A*S*H.

I doubt that many people around here had any real political views at all when they were watching All In The Family. I know I didn't.

It's greatness isn't diminished because you didn't understand it. I was too young be into it when it first aired, but I've seen plenty of reruns since and it is still funny and meaningful. Hell, all the haters of "political correctness" should love it. Some of the stuff they got away with then was amazing.

I didn't understand the politics when I figured out that I didn't like the comedy. I can't imagine that adding a layer of political cliches on top of it would make it better.

They got away with exposing racism for what it is. Also of note it was the first show to air the sound of a toilet flush. The show Soap also broke ground on subjects considered taboo~

That's part of its greatness. They could get laughs from "serious" subjects like racism as well as the lowbrow toilet terlet flush.
