Schools need to cut some slack to minorities who behave badly

You can't make this shit up…Teachers who go along with this deserve the little bastards in their classes. What behavior are we teaching?

The Obama administration, concerned that “zero tolerance” policies are sending too many students to court instead of the principal’s office, on Wednesday urged schools to back off — particularly in the case of minority students and other federally protected groups.

“Racial discrimination in school discipline is a real problem today,” said Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who joined Attorney General Eric Holder in speaking about the new guidance. Holder said ”students of color and those with disabilities” often receive “different and more severe punishment than their peers.”

While the nation’s schools are under local control, they must follow federal civil rights and disability laws. And the new guidance for the nation’s schools could subject more of those schools to federal discrimination lawsuits. In fact, the crackdown already is happening, as CNSNews.com previously reported.

While the guidance is “voluntary,” it encourages schools to set up a “record keeping system” that tracks demographic information on misbehaving students, including their “race, sex, disability, age and English-learner status” along with the infraction, the discipline imposed, who imposed it, etc.

“Schools should establish procedures for regular and frequent review and analysis of the data to detect patterns that bear further investigation,” the guidance says.

Really? Some students are being suspended / arrested for uniform code violations or laughing in class?

This is likely just another example of the tragedy of low expectations.

While you son or daughter is in school trying to learn they will be forced to put up with the antics of unruly students, the teachers forced to keep them in their classroom because they can't be punished.

Spare the rod...........

ITT make a bullshit headline.

Saying schools should back off on zero tolerance policies does not equal cutting slack for misbehavior.

I know I said that I was outta here for a while.
But the internet was boring without CP.

As to the topic:

Why is this a surprise to you?

THIS IS ALREADY BEING DONE.

Look up PBIS-Positive Behavior Strategy Interventions.
or as I like to call it-Puts Blame into Staff.

Tell me to F off? -Conference with student.
Bring a knife to school? Is it more than three inches? 5 days suspension. If not, one day depending on intent.

PBIS is a way to shorten suspensions and get kids back into the classroom ASAP.
But-it sends a message. The kid can do almost anything and not get punished.

If a teacher has not taken the prescribed steps to stop the behavior, then the student may not be punished unless it becomes a chronic problem. We have behavioral intervention specialists to determine that.

PBIS is driving teachers from schools of need to schools of ease. It is burning out young teachers. It is making some of the most liberal union teachers think about whom they vote for and why they are in the occupation. Major stress.

Everything in school today is about data. Behavior, class grades, score, what is taught, how it is taught, is it culturally relevant and HOW MANY KIDS ARE SENT OUT ON REFERRALS FROM YOUR ROOM. Remember, teachers cannot suspend, only admin. The less they suspend, the better the school looks.
But kids see little/no punishment as a win.

Then when I hear about others that could teach, I say "Ok, but can you deal with behavior?"

Just so you know- I have very little behavior problems in my class. I do not feel like I have to put up with crap from anyone. You are here to learn science and be a good person. Because of that, when I send someone out, It means that I have exhausted all options and the kid needs to be punished. I have that reputation. If you were in my class my first few years, It wasn't that way.

This philosophy of discipline is NO DISCIPLINE. If you think the younger generation is spoiled now? Wait.

Our district has been moderate with some of PBIS. There is a push for good discipline in our area. But, I know of other districts in Minn and other places that are all in and kids get away with too much.

I did decide to leave my weather banner on here to show my place of employment.
Teachers-chime in.
