Has anyone here researched their heritage?

I recently have taken an interest in this. My cousin traced my fathers side. I found the results fascinating hence my avatar. I have started looking into my mothers side. I am two generations removed from Ireland. This much I already knew however tracing my bloodline back to the potato famine and confirming that this lead directly to my presence in America has been an enjoyable investigation. The running joke in our family is my brothers and sister are one fifth of Irish whiskey from being pure. My father spilled the ink as he was three quarters Irish. My research has just begun~

That's slick. I didn't realize there were two famous Leibniz either; they're papa and son, it turns out.

One can order individualized posters from that site, which might make an interesting gift when it goes way back like your friend's does. I'm thinking of getting one for myself because it looks like they can get all the way back to the 14th century and it would be nice to see the whole tree at once, as opposed to link by link. My wife's mathematical geneaology stops with her academic father from Stanford because the database doesn't (yet) have the link for her academic father's academic parent.

A story from my genealogy.

Back in the 18th century, one of my ancestors, Jacob, was the head minister of a church in Herzberg, in eastern Switzerland, until he was caught fooling around with the 15-year-old daughter of one of his parishioners. She had a baby from the affair, and they were ostracized from the community and eventually died of exposure, and the minister lost his position and was basically cast out of the church as a pariah. He had a wife, Eva, and several teenage-age children, and they all had to move to western Switzerland, where he got a position as a minister in a different church, and they settled down in a new town.

Jacob's oldest daughter's boyfriend then raised the idea of emigrating to the New World. If there was ever a place to start over, that was it, and Jacob and Eva and the family agreed. They spent over a year gathering like-minded families, and saving up to purchase a ship for the voyage. Packed with supplies and optimism, they sailed up the Rhine River toward the English Channel and, eventually, America. The whole time, Eva badgered and harangued Jacob, never letting him forget that this was all his fault.

At the time, France and Austria were at war, and the front line was the Rhine River. With the French camped on the west side and the Austrians on the right, their little ship was harassed by both. First, the Austrians would force him to land, and accuse the travelers of being spies; they'd push Jacob around, swing their sabers over his head (literally; it was documented), take a bunch of supplies, and eventually let them go. The next day, the French would do the same. Eventually, though, the beleaguered little ship made it down the river.

And for the whole journey across the ocean, Eva continued to badger Jacob. The other families on the ship would sigh and shake their heads as Eva yelled at her husband and hit him with sticks while their children looked on. Even so, the ship pressed forward, weathering the seas, and eventually landed in New Jersey. Their dreams were realized, their hard work paid off, and they could have the new beginning they had worked so hard for. There were plenty of other German-speaking immigrants at the time, and the beginnings of a Moravian church, and eventually they would settle in a land called Pennsylvania and raise generation after generation of descendents.

Not Jacob, though. Exactly one day after they landed, he had a heart attack and dropped dead on the spot.
