Fourteen Images That Explain The World If It Were Only One Hundred People

I'm putting this in DC because if it gets any reaction it will likely be a political one, but I did find this interesting:

Earth’s population recently surpassed 7 billion people and that number is still growing. To comprehend the composition of our species 100people.org sought to help people, “better understand the complex issues facing our planet and the resources we share by framing the global population as 100 people”.

Below I have compiled the statistics on 100people.org into 14 image macros that will hopefully help you visualize and understand the Earth and the people who inhabit it.

If you would like to see the sources of the statistics below, click here and scroll to the bottom of the page for the websites used for each statistic.

Some may be fairly obvious:

Portugese is the shocker there. Such a tiny country (population of 11 million, so around the same as Pennsylvania, or Ohio, and a little less than Illinois), and yet their old empire was large, and so Brazil, with 200 million people, has it as their primary language, along with a number of other places spread around the globe.

Well, gee, England's a tiny country too with an old but large former empire.

Yeah, except I think most people are familiar with the fact that English is very widely spoken around the world. I doubt many Americans would guess that the ratio of English speakers to Portugese speakers, worldwide is only 2:1.

Nor are many Americans familiar with the Portugese empire and Portugese colonialism in general, I imagine.

Pretty much. But I like to imagine it as a group of one hundred people rather than a mathematical expression. How odd would it be to hang out in a room as one of those one hundred people for a few days?

I did not anticipate a 2 to 1 at all.

Neither would I.

Nor would I have thought that more people speak Portugese, or Bengali, than Russian.

Not surprising at all. The old Soviet Union was a collection of republics that spoke a myriad of different languages. It is one of the main reasons it was difficult to govern. The new Russian Federation faces similar problems.

The Hindi and Bengali speakers would probably also speak English. English is the lingua franca in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

This one doesn't seem to be sourced, and I'm very curious how they define it. It's hard to believe that 23 percent of the world's population is homeless.
