Fourteen Images That Explain The World If It Were Only One Hundred People

I'm putting this in DC because if it gets any reaction it will likely be a political one, but I did find this interesting:

Earth’s population recently surpassed 7 billion people and that number is still growing. To comprehend the composition of our species 100people.org sought to help people, “better understand the complex issues facing our planet and the resources we share by framing the global population as 100 people”.

Below I have compiled the statistics on 100people.org into 14 image macros that will hopefully help you visualize and understand the Earth and the people who inhabit it.

If you would like to see the sources of the statistics below, click here and scroll to the bottom of the page for the websites used for each statistic.

I'm actually more curious how they decided to use the image of a Storm Trooper with a drink umbrella and a smaller Storm Trooper with what looks like wings for some reason.

The winged Storm Trooper is made from Legos so it's smaller than the action figure, and the Lego Storm Trooper is carrying a Teddy Bear, so I assume that it is supposed to be a juvenile Storm Trooper. Even ignoring that there wouldn't/couldn't be uniformed juvenile Storm Troopers, I don't know why a kid playing in the rain near an adult with an umbrella would signify homelessness, other than perhaps expressing the 23:77 ratio.

The statistics on shelter closely matched the stats on access to electricity. Maybe shelter included heating and lighting ability. Other than Tom Hanks trapped in the airport, I can't think of too many people who have access to electricity but not a roof over their head.

Yeah, and on the inverse side it seems like there would be a whole lot of people with a roof over their head and no electricity, so the shelter numbers should be a lot higher than the electricity numbers.

When I was in Madagascar a few years back, I would pass all sorts of huts that didn't have electricity when I was going into town, but they were well built and I would think that they would protect against wind and rain. Maybe they would be a little drafty and leaky since they had palm frond roofs and bamboo sides, but I would think they would still count as shelter. I guess it depends on how strict the definition is. But I bet these types of villages exist in a whole lot of places.

Maybe it's because they're storm troopers and not sunshine troopers.

I considered the possibility that maybe they made Storm Trooper uniforms for kids so they could pretend they were going to work like pops. The wings were a bit confusing though.

Oddly, the "adult" Storm Trooper seems to be beckoning the "juvenile" Storm Trooper into the shelter of the umbrella. Possibly with interpretive dance moves. Perhaps everything involving the Storm Troopers is meaningless, including the wings, and the picture is presented as a personification of the concept of "shelter."

English is the worlds language regardless if its primary or not. 5%? Laughable, several factors of that can and do speak or read it

Don't scientific reports have to be written in English? Thought I read that somewhere once upon a time.

There are several scientific journals in languages other than English. Forty years ago, a requirement for earning a PhD was to be able to read scientific literature in at least one language other than English, normally Russian, German or French. Increasingly, the most important scientific literature is published in English. However, many of the top scientists do not speak English as their mother tongue. Last year I met a very esteemed Chinese scientist that runs a large center who speaks Japanese, but not English.

The OP must be listing primary languages. Otherwise, you're right, it doens't make sense. 5% of the world's population is about 350 million. The population of US+England+Canada+Australia alone tops 400 million by a good margin. Obviously not everyone in those countries speak it, or speak it as a primary language, but the vast majority do.

They're also cheating somewhat. "12 speak Chinese". China's official language is Mandarin, but vast, vast portions of China's population do not speak Mandarin, but rather speak other dialects, most prominently Cantonese. There are easily hundreds of millions of people in China who don't speak Mandarin, and yet they don't separately list those dialects, so I'm pretty confident they're just lumping them all together as speaking "Chinese".

And not that these aren't just accents. If someone who speaks Mandarin (only) and Cantonese (only) meet, they can't converse. In fact, many of these regional dialects (there are many others in addition to the primary two) have less in common than the European romance languages have with each other. The written language is the same, however.

A "lingustic map" of China is below:
