Late Night Leftists

I haven't watched Fallon yet, but diLorenzo makes some good observations imo. So I thought this comment was revealing about why Leno may have been let go.

So Johnny Carson’s former head writer authors an article claiming that Jay Leno was canned from “The Tonight Show” despite fabulous ratings because he made jokes about BOTH political parties, including jokes about King Obama.

[Article here and it's pretty good too. He mentions has Carson did not like to be seen with politicians and did not reveal his politics.
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Hollywo...r-hosts-obama]

His replacement, Jimmy Fallon, had as one of his first guests the always-cheerful-and-entertaining Michelle Obama. Meanwhile, the guy who got Fallon’s gig at the other late-night show, Seth Myers, has as one of his first guests on the first night of his new show the buffoonish Joe Biden. Gotta wonder what Jay thinks of this. Michelle and Joe had to have been booked a long time in advance, one would think, which suggests that the plan was always to remake these shows into an Obama administration love-fest.

(Get a load of the “I think I just peed my pants” expressions on Fallon and Myers while in the presence of King Obama and Biden, respectively, in the pictures in the links).

UPDATE: Ellen F. writes to say that Fallon has been making jokes about Edward Snowden, calling him a “tattletale,” whereas Jay Leno would have made jokes about the NSA [and TSA].

Of course not because he was a unknown when Leno started. If he could have booked the POTUS at the time he would of in a heartbeat. It is all about ratings. I have no idea why anyone would be upset Fallon had the first lady on for ****s sake~

Fallon is a performer and an outstanding one at that. Some of his old bits were horrible (throwing hotdogs through mouths), but his performance bits are always good. Brian Williams rapping various songs is good as well.

Given that Leno was the absence of funny, I think Fallon will do quite well.

I cannot stand Barry or his nitwit VP. I also could careless what his wife thinks. That said I think Fallon is funny and will do well in this gig~

His ongoing bits, like the Lost and Glee parodies, were hilarious as well.

I don't watch a ton of late night. It's well past my bed time. But what I've seen of Fallon, he's just goofy. I like him a lot, but I have trouble even seeing him as a political being. If he makes a political joke, I'd assume it's just a throw away laugh.
I can, however, see Meyers being pretty political. he has a little more gravitas to him, and I could see that turning into more of a Stewart type of role.

Either way, this thread is hilarious.

So now that makes him qualified to take the premier late night talk show spot?

Like, is he a standup comedian? Does he have other things he's done? Was he ever a writer like Conan used to be? There's gotta be something else to him. I know he does songs, but ****, any butthole can do that.
Jimmy Fallon is terrific at late night. I think it was NPR that had a really smart review about how the same things that made him suck on SNL make him great for late night. Laughing at his own sketches is a faux pas on SNL, but brings joy on a late night stage.

I think he was a standup comedian, and based on the skits he's done, he's done some unbelievably creative sketches that are better than we've seen on Late Night for years. He's doing a great job. And yes, I tuned out when Michelle Obama was on -- I could care less because when a politician isn't on, no one would ever claim his show is even slightly political.

Leno was fired because he is unbelievably stale to a young audience. Period. His demo is old and dying, and young audiences pull in most of the advertising dollars. This has absolutely nothing to do with politics.

I actually thought Leno's opening monologue was normally better than Letterman's. I know Leno was sort of a punchline, but in the stand-up portion at the beginning I thought he was funnier.
Not that either writes any of that.

Really? Is that why its ratings dropped when Leno was removed in 2009.
I'll admit advertisers do covet that demographic but it didn't work last time.

Millenials watch significantly less TV than non millenials. They use the internet more.

The point made by diLorenzo is how early and fast the show went with Michelle Obama as the first appearance and how struck Fallon looked about having her. Then the same for the guy who replaced Fallon...but with Biden.

I've considered this but there's too many things that scream otherwise.

1) Leno still had massive ratings and advertisers will advertise in such a case
2) Leno's humor was ageless
3) You could not tell Leno's politics--the way it should be
4) He told jokes about everyone BUT included too many Obama jokes when NBC is a major Obama lap-dog for a thin-skinned president
5) Fallon was allowed to be disrespectful to Michele Bachmann and that was okay.
6) Johnny Carson remained on the show until he retired at age 67
7) Larry King nearly died on his show
8) Letterman is 66 to Leno's age of 63
9) Federal law prevents age discrimination
10)The millennials don't really watch late night TV. They're either out texting, sexting, using the internet, smoking pot or working out their gender. They watch SNL to find out who to vote for. ( I stole some of these but they make sense.)

Too much there to claim age or age alone did it. It was more than that. JMO Most late night shows are very left-wing and skewered Bush. But Fallon was fawning over the Obamas showing his politics.

Leno is still one of the best pure joke guys. The people who think he is old and corny must not watch his show.
