Good recruiting news won’t stop coming for Mizzou

Brian McLaughlin @BrianMacSDS

Terry Beckner has a nice group of top schools chasing him, and he really didn’t show his hand a lot–at least not until today.

Beckner’s head football coach told 247Sports.com the Tigers could be considered an early leader in the mix for the five-star defensive lineman. LSU, USC and Ohio State are just a couple of other schools chasing him down. His coach, Darren Sunkett of East St. Louis (Ill.), also said he thinks Beckner (6-4/295) wants to play in the SEC. And of course, East St. Louis is closest to Mizzou.

Mizzou received a commitment from Beckner’s prep teammate and four-star RB Natereace Strong on Tuesday and another Wednesday night when four-star QB Drew Lock made it official. The good recruiting news keeps pouring in for a program that isn’t used to getting this much pub for elite national talent–all in the same week.

Beckner was on Mizzou’s campus for an unofficial visit this week, witnessing Strong’s commitment to the coaching staff. Strong and Beckner have expressed interest in possibly playing together at the next level.

I'm simultaneously disgusted by his stupidity and immaturity, disappointed that someone with so much ability seems to be so willing to piss it away, and yet I also feel sorry for him because, in spite of everything given to him, he just can't un-**** himself.

These types of debacles just make me want to stop watching college sports altogether. You either win with rank scumbags who defile the university's name and academic integrity or you get your ass kicked all over the field.

**** this shit.
Makes you wonder how his mind got backwards....was someone from his past whispering in his ear telling him he was so talented that they wouldn't touch him no matter what?

Or did his hype get inside his brain and make him believe he was untouchable?

Million dollar talent.... million dollar ego...1 cent brain. I remember someone saying that before about another wasted opportunity for a college athlete.

they felt that there would be no charges. However, they also knew that pinkel would be beside himself pissed. Whenever pinkel talks with recruits/other groups, he always emphasizes character. My guy thought he'd get a severe punishment/suspension, but I doubt he's surprised with the dismissal.

Perhaps this will be the wake-up call he listens to and make good with it yet. Either way, this team will miss his on-field skills...

agreed, but we've got guys ready to play. It also won't hurt if Nate brown gets on the field early.

It's in incredibly complicated situation. His dismissal helps and hurts recruiting simultaneously. It certainly makes the team worse this year, but perhaps better in future years. It accelerates the learning curve for guys like Brown, which is nice on one hand, but costs them a year of eligibility as well.

It was a stupid, immature decision by Dorial, he cost himself millions of dollars, he hurt his teammates, and ****ed over the fans.

One of, although not the most disappointing, aspect for me is that it ends this way with the best recruit we may ever see, and it's not really all that surprising because it's Missouri and things just always end that way for them. Statistically, someone is going to be snakebit, but when the screws are constantly put to a team you follow it saps a lot of your energy, because you're always waiting for the guillotine to fall.

Hunt, Sasser, and Moore were going to play. Copelin and, now, Brown are going to be in the rotation. Brown playing now won't do anything but help with the North Gwinnett pipeline.

Given our line, running backs, TEs, and QB, we should be fine. After thoroughly enjoying a 12-2 season and playing in the SEC Championship game, I'm done playing the "snake-bit" card. We'll win some, we'll lose some, but we're never going to be too far behind in talent. That threshold has been passed.

Sadly, I do not think it cost him any money if he picks up another college and preforms until he is drafted. I doubt he cares about the other two. Or he would of already listened to coaches and smarter players.

Top 5 season in the only sport that matters in NCAA in the toughest conference by a country mile? Pushed the Big bevo shit in in the prime time Cotton Bowl. Not too shabby.

If Missouri can consistently recruit like they have the first few months of this cycle, you're right, but the names aren't on the LOIs yet, nor have we developed a pattern of this level of recruiting. You're putting the cart before the horse.

Having a player who could go top five, perhaps #1 overall, setting school records while playing in primetime games is a massive recruiting chip based solely upon the added exposure it grants you. DGB getting shitcanned opens up opportunities and catches, sure, but it also makes things more difficult for Mauk, the offense as a whole, and it depletes the talent level of the team.

Kicking him off the team was the right and ethical thing to do, but you're just being a damned fool if you don't realize the extent of the Mizzou-ness of this.

Consider it this way: Pinkel has brought in three 5* recruits in his tenure. Two of the three were massive ****ing shithead distractions and horrible, horrible teammates, yet you need those guys to compete.

The Faustian bargain that is major college football recruiting is baldly horseshit.

Who was the last player to get kicked off a team not play another season of DI ball, and get drafted in the top 5-10? He's not getting a Cam Newton year to rehab himself at the DI level. It is absolutely going to drop him.

Think about what happened to Randy Moss in the draft, and Moss was able to go back and play at a mid-major.

He was going to drop regardless of what decision Pinkel and Aldon made.

It's probably in his best interest to slip out of the first round, so he can cash in on that big payday earlier (assuming he doesn't continue to be a colossal **** up).

Missouri is counting on sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk to emerge as a leader, the new face of a team trying to build of a breakthrough SEC East division title in its second season in the nation’s baddest football conference and a rallying force in the chase for a repeat.

However, more changes are afoot for Mauk, who has something of a gunslinger’s reputation after displaying a flair for improvisation during a four-game audition when James Franklin was out because of a shoulder injury last fall.

Mauk said scrambling was a means of survival against Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. He was the backup. He had logged a backup’s reps for six weeks. He didn’t want his play to derail the Tigers’ magical season.

Now solidified as the starter, though, Mauk wants to command the offense more than stun the defense.

“I want to stay in the pocket more,” Mauk said. “Last year, I didn’t get thrown in because I knew I was going in there when James got hurt, but I wasn’t as ready as I am now.”

It’s been a primary focus for Mauk during the spring and the results have been encouraging.

“Last year, I was probably a little quick on some games to pull the trigger to get out there and go,” Missouri associate head coach/quarterbacks coach Andy Hill said. “You can see he has confidence that he can make something happen with his feet, but I think you’ve seen — in practices anyway — he’s doing a nice job of staying back in there (the pocket) and trying to find somebody down the field.”

Mauk is 30 of 48 for 317 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in two public spring scrimmages.

“Everything has slowed down so much, so I can go through my reads and I’m not hanging on things,” Mauk said.

Of course, Mauk’s ability to freelance, to break containment and extend plays, certainly will remain part of his game. It also goes hand-in-hand with his off-the-cuff leadership style, which he admitted to borrowing, in part, from former offensive lineman Max Copeland.

“Maty’s a helluva of player,” senior wide receiver Darius White said. “He’s one of those kids you don’t come around too often. Maty’s going to be Maty. Regardless.”

His teammates are just excited to see what Maty Mauk 2.0 can do.

“We saw Maty and what he can do this last year,” Morse said. “We’re confident in what he can do and he’s confident in us, which is fantastic. There’s no step off from his progression last year. He’s taking leaps and bounds every day.”
