#bringbackourgirls

So I'm kind of fascinated by a cultural discussion that is happening around this whole "#bringbackourgirls" thing.

On one side, you've got Rush Limbaugh, sounding a little callous:
I just think this is pathetic. I'm just stunned. We got 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda group, and nobody cared or talked about it for a while. Hillary wouldn't call 'em a terror group. Now, all of a sudden, for some reason, we're on a big push to get 'em back and this is how...? Well, you can't read the writing. It's a plea for people on Twitter to get in gear and bring the girls back. It's #BringBackOurGirls. Apparently there's a Twitter... What do you call 'em, handle? It's the number sign
"BringBackOurGirls." (interruption) It's a hashtag, okay.

Anyway, there's Mrs. Obama looking sad and grim, and the sad thing here is that the low-information crowd that's puddling around out there on Twitter is gonna think we're actually doing something about it. (interruption) Exactly. Yeah, they'll say, "At least she is trying, Mr. Limbaugh. What are you doing? At least Mrs. Obama cares! At least they're trying to get them back."

Here it is again, closer. See it? Is that not pathetic? What the hell message does that send? Imagine if bin Laden were still alive. Imagine Ayman al-Zawahiri. Can you imagine? They're laughing at this over in the huts and so forth wherever they are. It is just unbelievable. #BringBackOurGirls. They're Nigerian, unless there's something that we don't know.

But are we really this powerless? The correct way to look at this is the audience that will see it -- the Twitter, low-information universe -- will say, "Oh, Mrs. Obama! At least they care, and at least they're trying to do something."
On the other side, I guess you've got Michelle Obama, who is doing the radio address this week to "demand justice for Boko Haram kidnap victims."

The question that I have about all this is "to what end?" I don't particularly like Rush Limbaugh. He's tone deaf at the very least. But isn't it also tone deaf to hold up a sign for twitter without any real call to action? This reminds me a lot of the #occupywallstreet stuff, where they call a bunch of people to "raise awareness" - but that's the extent of the call to action.

I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. As a father, I feel terrible about these girls, but I would be disgusted if the extent of the people with the power to do anything about it basically turned that loss into a branding campaign for how in touch and compassionate they are.

Feeling sorry for troops is not a sufficient basis for a foreign policy decision. Just be thankful they're there for us when it needs to be done and generous when they suffer the burdens of those actions for all of us.

Kidnapped Nigerian Girls Reportedly Located But Not Rescued

NIGERIA- Nigeria's military has reportedly located nearly 300 school girls who were kidnapped by Islamic extremists.

But military officials fear that rushing in and using force to free the girls could get them killed.

For now, they're not revealing where the girls are being held.

"The good news for the girls is that we know where they are but we cannot tell you. We cannot come and tell you military secrets,” said Air Marshall Alex Badeh, Nigeria’s Chief of Defense.

The students were seized by Boko Haram militants from a remote northeastern school on April 14th.

The terror group has threatened to sell the kidnap victims into slavery if Nigeria's president does not free detained insurgents.

Dozens of protesters have gathered in Nigeria's capital, calling on their government to rescue the girls.

Nigeria's president and military have come under fire for their slow reaction to the mass abduction six weeks ago.

Critics saying the government's response to the crisis has been inadequate.

``Those are signs of a failed government, a lazy government, a government that has being defeated, a government that has abdicated its responsibilities," said protestor, and university teacher, Ekiyor Welson.

Nigeria is finally accepting international help this month, including assistance from the U.S.

A senior U.S. Defense official tells Fox News that reports the kidnapped girls have been located cannot be independently confirmed.

I thought BH changed their threat of selling the girls into slavery to a prisoner exchange?

Nope, 'cause they're not there for us.

If they get ordered to risk their lives for non-Americans, for NO national defense reasons, no preservation of our liberty reasons, soley because we feel sorry for others (the stated purpose) particularly when there are hundreds of similar incidents around the world; then feeling empathy for Americans chances to get killed, maimed or suffer mental issues--all of which overflows our VAs costing my more of my hard-earned money is far more valid and appropriate. It is not the purpose of national defense which is what our Constitution stipulates.

granting for the sake of argument that the constitution stipulates national defense as the only purpose of our military, doesn't your position depend on the definition of national defense?

if it only means new-orleans-style repelling an invasion, then your position makes a lot of sense...

if it also means defending national interests, like keeping the oil shipping lanes open, it is pretty clear that we should do so, but i don't know if you would agree with that (without rereading your elventy billion posts)...

does it also mean using military force as an instrument of diplomacy, an area somewhere between the two more extreme examples?

i think it does, and diplomacy demands that nations with the ability to do so should respond to requests for assistance for humanitarian purposes (assuming enforcing international humanitarian law is a function of diplomacy, which it is)...

earthquakes, tsunamis, burro's harem...

all humanitarian disasters (although the burro brothers are on a much smaller scale), all requiring assistance from other countries, particularly the us...

so what say you, ms. pea?
