White House exposed top US spy in Afganistan

Obama's team.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/...637_story.html

The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops.

The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country.

My memory is that she was not covert employee, but the fact that she was a CIA employee was classified.

So, this isn't exactly unprecedented.
1. There's a world of difference between being outed on purpose under the President's authority for legitimate national interest reasons and being outed on purpose for personal reasons or being outed due to incompetence.

2. Valerie Plame's employment at the CIA was made public by an apparently inadvertent leak by one of Colin Powell's advisers, Dick Armitage, and he was never convicted of any crime.

3. Scooter Libby was convicted of obstruction, not of leaking classified information. He did disclose Plame's identity to a reporter, but he claims that he was acting on authority from the President through his boss the VP.

4. Was Plame "high ranking"? I guess that's a subjective judgment.

I think the mistake is worse, but I agree that it's probably not something someone needs to be prosecuted for. It's just another in the seemingly endless series of Obama administration blunders.

The Plame outing wasn't retaliation. First and foremost, it was carelessness on the part of Dick Armitage. As Robert Novak said shortly after he broke the story, the administration didn't seek him out with this information, it was raised as an afterthought in a meeting he had with his source (which turned out to be Armitage).

To the extent that Scooter Libby was spreading the word within the administration (and to Judith Miller) about Plame, it was as a part of an explanation for why the highly public, terribly flawed op-ed by Plame's husband regarding the yellowcake issue should be taken with a grain of salt. That's not retaliation, that's counterargument.
